I am so excited! I talked to a local home birth midwife, and barring anything unforeseen, we're going to use her! I have our doula already, and our midwife! Now I just need to tell our family, lol!!
In all seriousness, though, she spent more than an hour on the phone with me, answered all of my questions, was completely forthcoming and beyond that I just felt at ease. She'll send us our packet, and we'll review it and make the final decision. To be honest, though, I think I already have. I am so happy this is exactly what I wanted. I am also looking forward to having a care provider and birth place that isn't located an hour away. DH is on board with whatever choice I make, which is nice.
Do you ladies have any good tips/books for home birth research preparedness (I know it's super early . . .)?
Re: Talked to a home birth midwife today . . .
Ditto to all of this.
Also, you can feel at ease knowing that even your dirty house is far cleaner and less likely to give you or baby an infection than any hospital.
perplexed59: also had my first at home but am now in a situation where we might do hospital instead (overseas, living in a small town). If we go hospital route I'm interested to see how different the experience is to birthing at home.
Thanks guys! I'm super excited!!
My first was a hospital birth (nearest hospital is about 45 minutes away) and I felt like the worst part of birth for me was the travel there. I didn't have any bad experiences, and the staff and my midwife were wonderful. I was at the hospital for about an hour before I was holding my son. I arrived at 7 cm dilated. We ended up staying there just over 24 hours, and paid over $2000 for it (no meds, not even an IV). We have insurance, but it's an individual policy (DH and I are self-employed) so our deductible is $7,500 for maternity. I know we'll be paying out of pocket like last time so money, along with my strong desire to NOT travel and distaste for hospitals are the deciding factors for my home birth.
I feel so happy, and DH is totally on board! I didn't even have to have a "discussion".
