Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Training your breasts? Also posted on BF board.

Hello ladies. I am a mom to a 20-month-old who I EP'd for 8 months with (but had enough frozen to make it to a full year of drinking) and a 2 week old who I am currently nursing and pumping for. My question is, can I somehow train my body to make milk only in the afternoons thru the next morning when I am with my baby and then send formula to daycare for during the day? I love that I can just pick DS up and feed him in the middle of the night and I love the closeness that it gives, but my job is just not a good enviroment for pumping. I found that out the hard way with DD. So I am just wondering if I can have the best of both worlds? Thanks so much!

  • Unfortunately not. Your supply will tank if you don't pump/nurse for that long.

  • Yes, I've heard of people who have done this successfully. Just nurse when you can and your body will figure it out.

Yes.  I EPed for DD and once my supply was established, I never pumped between 8 pm and 6 am.  I pumped 4 times a day (once in the morning, twice at work, and once before bed).  I'm working towards the same schedule now.  My body adjusted and I had enough milk to feed her exclusively breastmilk until 1 year.  I even stopped pumping early like you because I had a freezer stash.  I would think that just nursing while you are with LO would work the same way.  GL

  • I EP and try to pump three times a day. I do not pump after I go to bed and sometimes I am forced to wait up to 12 hours between pumping because of my needy toddler and newborn. My supply has gone up and down but has never not been enough. I have a freezer stash of about 200 ozs. So I would say that yes it is doable. Just try and pump or breastfeed as much as you can. You will feel full until your body figures out what is going on.
