It was a month wait until we got our first call, which we declined. We declined two more calls and then we accepted the fourth call, which was two months after being licensed.
ETA: Our complete timeline is on my blog under "Tour de Fostering" if you are interested.
When she called to tell us we were licensed she asked us about a placement, but it was out of our range so she didn't expect us to take it. We've been licensed since the end of March and we got our first real call yesterday....we were on hold for 3 weeks due to moving though.

I should also add that I think your wait time can vary based on your preferences. I think part of the reason we got calls so quickly after being licensed is because we were open to most anything for little kids. We stated we would prefer under 4, but would consider older children on a case-by-case basis. We were also available to care for a newborn for 6 weeks until they were able to be in daycare, which was a HUGE need in our county. And being open to children who tested positive for drugs and/or HIV also made us available for more calls.
BUT I think you shouldn't open up your preferences to things that you truly aren't comfortable with just to try to get a call quickly. The call will come when it is supposed to! Just try to be patient and enjoy sleeping in!
We got our first call before all our homestudy was complete. Basically the local supervisor needed to finish signing paperwork, etc. and it had been on the back burner b/c of more pressing issues.
They really wanted us to do a week long respite while a foster family went on vacation so we said yes and got completely approved at the same time.
it took a while - like a couple months but it doesnt really count because we basically sought out our first placement on our own (long story). It was so fustrating to me because we were wide open on what we'd take. But, it just meant that there werent kids coming into care at that time which is a blessing.
If you are like me and feel the need to do *something*, contact the matcher at your county or agency for a little "reminder" call about your preferences and your home being open. If you are on their mind, they will think to call you first when the next child(ren) comes in.

I completely agree with this! We were very involved with the system while we were waiting for our placement. I helped out with some of the trainings and we always let them know that if they needed volunteers to give us a call. We also accepted a weekend respite care, which made us known to quite a few more social workers. I think this is why we seemed to get calls that were outside of our preferences so quickly after being licensed.
