Baby Showers

What games are you having?

I know many women here loathe them. I, on the other hand, love them!

I think baby showers without at least a couple of games are boring and if I don't know many people there, baby shower games are a nice icebreaker.

If you are having games, which ones are you doing?

My hostess and I are trying to decide which ones to do and so far we have agreed on 3. The measure your belly one, The "Can't Say Baby" one and the one where we give each person 1 minute to quickly write down all the baby items they can think of on a piece of paper.

We have 5 prizes so we just need to figure out 2 more games.

Thanks!

  • I like playing Baby Bingo for the "opening of presents".

  • I don't know which ones I'm having (I haven't decided on them yet, and my mom told me to pick them out), but some of the ones on the list to consider (that you haven't mentioned) are:

Who knows mommy and daddy best? (or just mommy)

Baby item scramble (words about babies or pregnancy scrambled up and guests have to unscramble them in a given amount of time)

  • I love them as well and most of my friends do too.  Funny, how so many on here don't.

Keep in mind that you might have "ties" so even though you have 5 prizes you might use more than one for each game if 2 (or more) people give the same measurement or come up with the same number of baby items.  KWIM?

A game that I like (and have used many times at showers I've hosted) is the baby items on a tray game.  The MTB walks around with the tray letting everyone take a look (maybe 15 seconds) and then walks out of the room.  The tray has about 15-20 small baby items on it.  After MTB leaves the room the women are asked questions about the MTB (what color were her shoes, was she wearing a necklace, earrings, how many, rings, how many, what color was her dress/top/etc.  It is really funny because a lot of people never hardly looked at the MTB so get a lot of answers wrong.

Another game that is surely an ice breaker (I played at a shower and have used it as well) is the "Pair of Bloomers Game".  The host puts the "bloomers" in a box that is wrapped several times with different colored/patterned tissue paper (maybe 15 times).  The guests are told that there is a pair of bloomers in the box and the person that takes off the last piece of wrapping has to wear the the bloomers for the rest of the shower.  Some guests need to be have "bloomers" explained - usually by an "older" guest.  Then while music is played they pass the box and when the music stops that person takes off one layer of paper.  It ends up being like a hot potato game.  People are laughing and almost throwing the box to each other.  Finally, the last piece of paper comes off and that person opens the box and finds a wrist corsage made with 2 flowers (pair of bloomers).  It is funny and guests love the play on words.  Obviously it has to be a decent sized box and the corsage has to be "cushioned".

  • I'm not a fan of games, but if you're going to do them, please avoid anything that has to do with guessing what's in the diaper, chugging baby bottles or tasting of baby food.  That is just gross.

The last game I played at a baby shower was to guess the "baby" name of a list of animals (i.e. a Dog = puppy, Cow = calf, etc.).  I guess I sort of liked it because I totally beat this biitch who googling on her phone.

  • I know you love games, but 5 is too many.  I went to a wedding shower once that had at least 5, and it was a solid 2 hours before the gift opening actually started.  I ended up having to leave early- the games took WAY too long.

I don't like games, but I can be a good sport about it - but once you got to #2 or #3, I'd be looking at my watch wondering when this shower was going to get moving (i.e. get to the gift opening).

  • This is what we did at mine.

     Baby name game

    Ex. A Tune - Melody

          Eye Color - Hazel

    Candy Game

Ex. Dad will need a good one of these for all those diapers.  A. Payday

Twin Boys A. Mike & Ike

           Girl  A. Baby Ruth

    Price Is Right

Buy baby items, let everyone guess the price.  Add the total.  Closest to actual price without going over wins.

Door prize went to the person with a birthday closest to my due date.

    Everyone had fun with these.

  • I am NOT a shower game fan at all but I think the two my sister is planning on for my shower is the guess the mommy's tummy size (with yarn) and the other is guess which baby is who (we are going to have baby pictures of DH and I and my siblings and my DH's siblings and see who can get the most correct) both winners rewarded with a door prize they get to keep.

Other than that I'm not approving any more games, most time will be spent eating and talking and opening gifts.

I have not idea what my MIL will do for my shower, I can only imagine she'll have a few games as well.

The other game I sort of like is filling a clear tote with diapers and having the guests guess how many are in the container. Person with the closest number without going over wins a door prize they get to keep. Then the mom-to-be gets the tote and the diapers!

Yes, please avoid the nasty games.

Also, cottoncandy, that is totally awesome. I'd be on my game if I saw someone googling easy crap like that.

  • We did the name the baby animals game at mine (and people were going nuts looking up the answers on their phones) - for that game whoever had the most right at the table won the centerpiece.  Then we did the BINGO game when opening gifts.  We had like 16 small prizes for that (Bath and Body lotions, shower gel or soap) and once people started winning the prizes were gone in a second.

I would consider that you might have a tie for a game and 5 games does sound like a lot/too many.  Three is really enough.

All of this.  I am not a fan of shower games (neither are most people in my family) but I will be a good sport through 2-3.  5 games really is too many.  I would make some suggestions of games for you as well, but you really have already gotten plenty and I can't think of any others.

Ooh! I like this one. I played it once at a baby shower and had so much fun. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for your input ladies. I was discussing this with my hostess today and since the shower will only be around 2-3 hours long, we are trying to come up with some games that are easy and fast so it won't take up much of the time.
