BFing...frustrated!

I have been supplementing since Beck was 2.5 weeks old. He has been gaining weight well since then. A couple of weeks ago he was weighed, I fed him (for 40 minutes) and he was weighed again. He only gained 1oz. So the lactation consultant said to keep supplementing.  Today I went back and did the same except we weighed him after each side. The first side he only gained 0.6 oz and the second side - 0oz! Three hours later I gave him a bottle and pumped. I got 1oz on one side and 3/4oz on the other.

I have been taking fenugreek and pumping some. I go back to work next week, so I was hoping to have this all figured out. The good news is that he is gaining weight and he is healthy.

  • I'm sorry, this sucks.  Be proud of yourself for getting this far, it's so discouraging. I've been supplementing too and EPing because of BF nonsense - you are not alone.  Every baby is different and as FTMs it's hard.  Don't feel bad about supplementing.  You could always pump to keep your supply going, supplement, and let LO suck for bonding and whatever he can get out of the boob, too? That's extra stimulation which means more milk for you anyway!  I need to take my own advice, but it's the truth - Whatever you do, don't feel bad - you're doing the best you can for your baby and that makes you a wonderful mom!

  • First, pumping is not a good indicator of milk supply. Diapers are the best. Second, I ff and bf DD. it was easier than pumping when she was at daycare. Don't give up. He still get benefits even if you're supplementing. And, so do you. BF is about comfort, too. Obviously, he's getting enough to eat, or he wouldn't be gaining.
  • I had these issues and used a supplemental nursing system to get the formula to my baby and stimulate my milk production. It took using it with every feeding for 7 weeks and now I exclusively breast feed. Google "supplemental nursing system" I used Medela's brand. It was originally created for adoptive moms but it was recommended to me by my lactation consultant.

  • I have heard oatmeal can help with increasing your BM supply.

I have also heard a way to try to increase your supply is for an hour a day pump for 10 minutes on, then 10 minutes off.  Try it a few days in a row and it may help a bit.

Either way, it is awesome you are giving him the BM that you can.
