Is membrane stripping painful?

Just curious because my doctors doing that at my next visit in a couple of days.

Re: Is membrane stripping painful?

  • Eh, I guess it depends on your pain tolerance and your doctor.  I've had mine stripped at the last two appts and it definitely felt uncomfortable but I wouldn't say it was painful.  As with cervical checks, the more tense you are, the more painful/uncomfortable it will be.  If you take a deep breath and let it out slowly, focusing on relaxing everything down there, it should be just fine.

For me it felt a lot like a long internal exam. Same kind of pressure in the same place.  My OB did the normal internal check and then the strip; the whole thing took about 30 seconds.

I've been 3cm and 80% for over two weeks so I'm not sure if it would be more/less painful if you're more/less dilated and effaced.    I'm also still pregnant 24+ hours later.

This, except I was 2cm last week and 3 cm this week. Other than that detail, totally the same.

This.  As soon as my doctor started it (this was yesterday) she said I'd feel crampy, and I did and that was basically the extent of it.  However, if you have a low pain tolerance you could identify the crampy-uncomfortableness with pain.  Just relax and you'll probably be just fine!
