CBC Results

I'm not expecting anyone to come up with advanced medical knowledge relating to CBC (Complete Blood Count) results, but was wondering whether any of you had noticed significant differences in yours since becoming pregnant?

I had a CBC in February and one yesterday and the results are very different from one another. I guess I am wondering if this is pregnancy related.

I'll be at my doctors surgery tomorrow for my RhoGam shot, so will ask then if there is any significance to the results.

But, while I have you here and while we are all pregnant and enjoying the pokes and prods of blood tests, I thought I'd ask = )

Re: CBC Results

  • I actually have all my test results online via my healthcare provider so I can make charts to compare, it is definitely interesting.

I noticed some changes, in particular my white blood cell count has gone slightly above the normal range.  I was a bit worried until I checked my last pregnancy and the levels were almost exactly the same.  My OB said they are often elevated in pregnancy just due to blood volume, etc.

  • I didn't think about blood volume, it makes sense looking at the ranges that some things would be elevated about the "normal" levels. Thanks for the heads up!

  • Yep, elevated white blood cell count is completely normal during pregnancy.  Mine has been up around 15-18,000.  Also hemoglobin is normally lower because your body is having to make so many new red blood cells.

  • I can be normal for there to be some change.  WBC goes up a bit, Hgb/Hct go down- can be dramatic if you have poor iron stores, and in some women platelets go down a bit as well.

  • from Williams Obstetrics, 23rd edition, Reference table for normal lab values in uncomplicated pregnancies:

    total white blood cell count-

    non-pregnant adult: 3.5 - 9.1

    first trimester: 5.7 - 13.6

    second trimester: 5.6 - 14.8

    third trimester: 5.9 - 16.9

    hemoglobin:

    non-pregnant adult: 12 - 15.8

    first trimester: 11.6 - 13.9

    second trimester: 9.7 - 14.8

    third trimester: 9.5 - 15.0

Platelet values are basically the same, although it's normal for them to decline in late pregnancy.

    hope that helps.

Know what is weird? My hemoglobin last  year was 3.9 and I had to get a transfusion and go on major iron to get it to a normal range. Now that I'm pregnant, it's 13 and I take way less iron now than I had been.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Thanks for the information ladies. Id didn't even occur to me consider a higher blood volume!
