My poor little guy tripped, stubbed his toe and ripped off half his toenail. It's raw and looks like it hurts so much

He's a trooper - didn't act like it bothered him all day. But he was crying a lot tonight and kept pointing to it. I'm not really sure what, if anything I can do about it. Band-aids don't stay on. I've been trying to keep it clean and I put some iodine on it. Anything else I can do? Or just wait for it to heal? Can it grow back or is he doomed to have a funky toenail all his life?

Re: What can you do about a ripped off toenail?
My good friend growing up had her thumbnail bitten off by a horse. I think she kept it covered with a Band-Aid (not going to work in your case) but it definitely grew back just fine.
Do you have tape to just wrap cotten or a bandage around it for now? (in addition to cleaning it, which it sounds like you've done). I'd suggest calling the dr. tomorrow. My toe nail was kicked partially off (dancing incident involving a drunk cowboy) a few years ago. I went to the podiatrist and he recommended removing the nail so that that it could heal and grow back evenly. It looked weird for a while but grew back normal.
Poor kiddo

I ripped my fingernail off a few years ago by shutting in a door, well actually it was half way off and they pulled it the rest of the way in the ER so that they coudl stitch up my nail bed ::shudders:: It really felt okay as long as the air wasn't touching it. Until it could heal some I put non-stick gauze on it and covered it with pet wrap. That stuff is amazing, it sticks to it self and will stay on. You can get it pretty much anywhere, I have seen it at Target, Walgreens etc. Maybe do that for a week or so to keep dirt out and let it heal some.
Here is what I am talking about:
HTH!
I can't see your pic but I googled and found what you're talking about. I'll see if I can find some and keep it covered for a few days so he doesn't bump the raw part too much. Thanks!
