Crib conversion kit/convertible crib

Hi, I am curious to know if anyone thinks a crib conversion kit is necessary? I finally found a crib I love but the conversion kit is out of stock, and babies r us isn't sure they will get it in from the manufacturer again. It's a pricey set, and I do plan to use for my second baby some day. Any advice? Thanks!

Re: Crib conversion kit/convertible crib

  • If you plan to convert the crib to a double bed at some point, then YES you need to get the rails, and now.
If you're planning on giving your LO a 'big kid' room makeover with new furniture, then it's not critical.
We bought a solid wood crib, and plan for our little guy to use it through childhood, so we bought the conversions.

  • How far does it convert without the kit? Ours is 3-1 (crib, toddler with rail, toddler without rail) and then you can buy a conversion kit to make it a full size. We skipped the conversion kit because we won't need it as a full, but we're not sure if we'll use the toddler options so it's nice to know its there.

  • If you love the bed... get it. You can find rails online. BUT.... I would buy them in the next 6 months at the latest. Otherwise they may quit making that style or color and then u won't get them at all....
I'm on baby boy #5 and all we've ever bought are 3 cribs... DS#1 has his converted to full in his room.... ds#2 and ds#3 were twins and we had 2 cribs for them... one is now ds#4 crib and the other is converted to full bed for my 16 yr old nephew (twins have bunk beds now).... ds#5 will be in a porta crib in my room until he's about 4 months old and then he will go to crib that ds#4 is in and ds#4 will go to toddler or full bed.

Long story short... we've gotten our money out of all of our cribs and their possible combos
  • I don't convert my cribs past crib-configuration so even the last one I had that came with part of the kit, I didn't use it.
  • If you plan on converting, make sure that you can source the conversion kit somewhere. If it's no longer being manufactured, that'll be a headache if you don't look for it now

  • Are you buying matching pieces like a dresser to go with the crib? If so I think there is a much more likely chance you will want to use it in the long run for at least one child. I think better to have it and not use it than want it and not have access to it.

  • Oh wow I didn't even think about getting the conversion stuff now! I'm really glad I read this, although I am still not totally sure about the conversion thing anyway but it seems like most cribs I have looked at happen to be convertible.
  • Is it the Sorrelle VIsta set?? We have the same problem but hubby found the conversion kit elsewhere online.
  • Thanks everyone! No it isn't the sorelle vista I'm looking at the Heidi Klum truly scrumptious crib. I've spoken to 3 different babies r us staff, and finally my MIL went in tonight and they charged her for it and said we would eventually get one so that's good news.
  • I wouldn't buy it without the kit. By the time you need it, it most likely will be discontinued. I didn't want to pay the additional $100-500 for the conversion kit so we got a crib that doesn't require one. Ours will take standard full size bed rails to convert.

  • Look into what you actually need to convert.  The crib we had DS in, converted to a toddler bed and then a full bed; however, to convert to a full bed, we didn't need anything special.  Ours connects to a standard metal frame ($20).
  • I only plan to convert crib to a toddler bed, because we might get tired of the style and color. Also I would prefer to transfer to a twin bed and only later to a double

We didn't buy one for our DS. We are inheriting a crib for this baby that does have one, so we may use it when the time comes, or we may not. Ideally, we are going to skip the toddler sized bed when the times comes for both children.
