Canadian healthcare is a big fail. I don't study canadian healthcare, I study what is going on in the US. As an NP student in her last semester, it's concerning to see the state of the healthcare system and where it is going. MDs, DOs, PAs, and NPs are rethinking the healthcare field because of what is going on.
And yes, the obamacare is a federal program. Don't kid yourself. What the hell else is it? A law? DUH. Jesus.
I posted on the TTGP obamacare thread, and I am relieved to see a few more like-minded people here. This WILL cost us more in both taxes and insurance premiums. How? Well...
For those that use the GOV health exchange plan, there is a subsidy for Those making up to 400% of the federal poverty level. For a family of 4, that is over 90k per year. The subsidy is greater for those that make less and phases out as you approach that 400%...but that is a LOT of families that are eligible for the government to kick in for some or all of their premiums. Where does the money come from? The same place it always comes from...either from increased taxes or by increasing the national debt. That is the only way the GOV brings in money. Just he act of having so many people eligible for these subsidies will be increasing the ammount we cough up to the IRS each year. So yes, increased taxes for all of us.
Second, the act of getting more people to pay premiums does, in theory, add more revenue through premiums and therefore create more money to pay out on medical treatments. But, the folks that stay on their parents insurance until 26 are usually not increasing revenue for premiums. They are on a family plan, which is often he same price regardless if there are 2 or 12 kids on the plan. Then you look at the fact there are no more lifetime caps for services. So those people that are the sickest, that have already cost the insurance company millions in payouts, continue to get payment for their medical services because there is no limit to how much one person can accrue in covered medical costs. So, more money that the insurance company has going out. Then, on top of that, nobody can be denied. So you could be pregnant, in the middle of chemotherapy, on the AIDS medications, in need of a heart transplant, on dialysis, or needing brain surgery immediately--you can't be turned down so the insurance company, without yet even getting a premium from you, they must pay some exorbitant costs for the treatment. So how in the world will they do that? By raising premiums on those that carry the health insurance. They can't magically create money either--they have to bring in more than they spend to survive. The penalty tax is quite minimal in relation to the cost of many premiums, so for many it actually makes good financial sense to pay the penalty and go without coverage while healthy, and sign up for insurance when needed. This type of thing only forces insurance companies to charge higher premiums so they have the funds on hand to pay out on services when people inevitably get sick or injured.
It is no different than if you could pay a $50 fine each year for not having car insurance, but as soon as you totaled your Masarati by running into a line of Astin Martins...you can call up Geico and get coverage for the accident you just had. How can geico afford to pay for your accident, when they had no premiums from you previously to offset the amount they will now have to pay out? They can't-not without astronomical premiums for those that carry insurance all the time.
I understand the joy of having pre-existing conditions covered. For those that have been denied, this is a great thing! But to think that it doesn't come wih increased costs Is just wishful thinking.
A bill created by dumb dumbs. Bring on the healthcare rationing, advent of socialistic care.
Not to mention, this is a recessional 'tax'. People without insurance are usually of low SES, and, from my understanding, will be taxed. High SES usually have healthcare, so no fines will be implemented. What am I missing here?
How on earth are insurance companies going to stay afloat? Insurance companies are a business. If they don't make money, they don't exist. If they don't exist, they can't offer the coverage. Fast forward a decade and we will ALL be on obamacare, because there won't be any other choice. Then there will be death panels etc. telling families that Grandma can't get surgery. If I lost you at death panels, you're naive. You think Canada or England can afford to do everything we currently do for patients here in the US? They can't. In England if a baby is born before 26 weeks gestation, that baby will not go to NICU. No lifesaving support is given. Most babies are viable (compatible with life) at 23-24 weeks. Riddle me that.
Edited for a typo.
You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what OBamacare is.
1. Poor people are already on Medicaid. That will not change. They have insurance (Medicaid) so they will not be taxed. You are only taxed if you do not have insurance.
2. If you are not poor enough to qualify for Medicaid, but still can't afford insurance, you will receive a subsidy to purchase your insurance. You can make up to $92,000 a year for a family of 4 and receive this subsidy (I believe that's the right number). So the only people who will be taxed are people who can afford insurance but refuse to get it. Guess what happens right now when those people get into car accidents and can't pay for their care? You and I pay for it with our taxes and with higher healthcare costs because WE are covering their unpaid share. Obamacare makes that person pay his own costs.
3. Obamacare makes you purchase insurance from a private insurance company. So there is zero chance that Obamacare will cause private insurance companies to go out of business. Quite the opposite - this will force every American go become their customer, so there is NOTHING the insurance companies would like better.
4. Your points about England, death panels, and NICUs are totally and completely false. They're simply not true. There's really nothing else to say about that.

Although six others on this post alone disagree in whole or part with the bill, obviously I alone am clueless and don't understand how things like oh...taxes...or funding derivatives for entitlement program, work. Ok, yup. I guess we better tell the CBO that their most recent report that Obamacare will end up costing about 820 billion more than they thought (whoopsies! Somebody forgot to carry the one, ya crazy mathaletes!) is way off. What a bunch of government dummies they are. Don't they know that all of those costs will be paid for by the Big bad $91 (minimum) penalty tax starting in 2014 for all those people that refuse to get insurance and nobody else at all will shoulder any of that 1.76 trillion dollar cost AT ALL?! Just the non-insurance holders-because that little tax fine really adds up you know! CBO, why U such a buzz kill?
Someone should probabally tell them that when the government needs more money, we just have to get on the phone and call up the treasury and have them print more. Duh! Hello-problem solved! While we have them on the phone, we should just totally ask them to print up a whole bunch of money and pay back China too--I just totes solved the federal deficit! I can like, retire! It is just like as long as I have checks in my checkbook, I can totally keep shopping, right?
This healthcare plan, wih the expansion of people eligible for Medicaid and the subsidy, costs MONEY. It has got to come from somewhere. Countries with socialized medicine have higher tax rates than our current tax system. This is a quasi-socialization of medicine. If you think your taxes won't raise to suppoort the bill, you are in for a big poopy surprise in 2014. Like, what a major bummer when that bizznatch named FICRA takes half our income, dudes. I'm ready for the increase, though not jumping up and down with glee, and will continue to utilize the existing tax code to minimize my taxable income and maximize my personal returns. Since I'm so totes clueless about money and stuff. If you want to see what happens when entitlements are expanded and taxes are NOT raised, please see exhibit A: Greece.
To be clear, I support health care reform. I support health insurance reform. My lack of support is for THIS bill because it WILL increase costs to an unsustainable degree. We need reform desperately, but THIS bill is not the answer in my opinion. We need a more affordable way to keep the good and beneficial parts, and realistic non-partisan estimates of actual costs. We can't give more things to more people and pay less to do so-not without sacrificing quality. That is basic economics.
I suggest making the Kardashians pay for all our insurance premiums. Then we would all be happy. Except Kim. But I never liked her anyway.
Jovencita, 100% what I'm thinking. People don't understand that this bill will make things much, much worse. The insurance companies, the fraud, and the entitled public that believes they're supposed to be taken care of.
The term, "entitled" makes me want to vomit. WHY are people ENTITLED to something? Nobody is entitled to something they didn't work to get.
And car, I wouldn't trust Canadians healthcare with a routine surgery. Why do you think patients get flown here to get complex healthcare? Because yours isn't good enough. There is no innovation. I can't imagine the lack of incentive to be a MD/DO up there. I don't study these truths, they're literally just talked about and laughed at in the US.

I work in health benefits & I'm not a fan either. To make matters worse a lot of carriers are adding mandatory maternity coverage to your plan regardless if your 23 year old Meagan or 71 year old Joe, no bueno
