Is the spelling of YOUR name "youneek"?

"Youneek" spellings of names come up a LOT on this board, and one of the arguments in favor of them is that a different spelling makes the name more special.

So, I'm curious. Do you have a name that is spelled differently than the traditional way? And, if so, does it feel more special to you to have that spelling, or do you wish your parents had chosen to spell your name the traditional way?

Nope. Kelly with a Y. It's cutesy enough as it is, so I am VERY glad my parents didn't go the Kellie, Kelli, Kelley route.

  • Mine is spelled correctly, but my youngest sister has a youneek spelling. Her name is Mad.ylan (without the period), pronounced like Madeleine. My mom and her dad wanted to honor Bob Dylan so spelled her name to reflect that. Still, it looks like it would qualify under the "add a random Y to a normal name" category.

  • My name is Kira, which isn't really you-neek, but I think Keira is more common. I prefer the spelling Keira because people often call me "Ky-ra".

  • I am not sure how "youneek" it is because there are so many ways to spell it but my middle name is Renae and I love the spelling compared to others. My sisters first name is Keri and when she was little no one spelled it that way and she was fine with that. But with both of these I know there are a lot of ways to spell each so probably not so unique but they were at the time I think!

  • Nope. My name is spelled correctly and I like it that way. It's just annoying when I have to spell it out for people because they've heard so many misspellings of it.

  • My name is Lauryn, and I too have to spell my name for everyone. Most people tell me they really like the way my name is spelled. My older sisters name is Ashleigh and growing up with 3 or 4 Ashleighs in the same year as her at school she was the only Ashleigh and I think she liked that it was different from all the they Ashleys
  • My full name, Allison, is spelled correctly but there are multiple legit spellings.  It can be annoying always spelling it for people.  When I say "Allison with 2 L's and an I", people give me a blank stare so I always have to spell it out.

Most people call me Ally though.  When I was little it was Allie, but when I was in middle school I thought the "y" was cute and changed how I spelled it.  Unfortunately, it stuck.

  • A tad.

My name is Kristin.  The I is a tad unique, I guess.  That's pretty tame in terms of crazy spellings, IMHO.

My sister is Chelsey.  The Y in lieu of an A is a tad different as well.  Again, pretty tame.

DH is Jayson.  The Y in there is in honor of his dad, Jay.  He died before Jay was born.  His mom changed the spelling of Jason to suit her needs.

Both of DH's brothers have traditional names with traditional spellings.

  • My name is Ashton. It's spelled correctly but I frequently have to spell it anyway because most people just assume Ashley. Plus my maiden name was usually misspelled and I had to spell that out as well. It doesn't really bother me having to spell it. It did bother me when I was a kid and my teacher would write "Good Job Ashley!" on the top of my paper...right beside where I wrote my name.

  • I'm pretty sure I fall in this category with Britny. I've never seen it spelled that way, and no one has ever spelled it correctly without help. I sometimes wonder what my parents were high on when they came up with the spelling, lol.

I have mixed feelings on it. I LOVE that I've never had someone spell their name the same as me. It's unique and draws comments. But I often get annoyed when I need to spell it our every.single.time. My maiden name also needed to be spelled out, so I just got to a point where I was used to it.

  • Nope, it's Shannon. I always cringe when I see Shannen Doherty. Ugh. I have seen Shannan too, and Shanon. Thank goodness my parents went with the traditional way!
  • Nope. My name is about as plain and straight forward as it gets.

My sister is Kari not Carrie though. However, I consider Kari well known enough that it's not youneek..I know quite a few, but I think some on the baby name board would beg to differ. She asked my parents about it once and they said they were just trying to keep it simple and didn't want any to think it was short for Caroline.

  • I wish my parents would have spelled my name the traditional way.   I hate having to state "with an I.E." everytime someone asks for my name.

  • The spelling of my name is definitely "youneek", so youneek that when the it's googled, binged, yahooed, myspaced, facebooked, etc (even just the first name alone) I'm the only one that appears. I love it because it does make me so different which fits my personality and way of being. However, I'm always hesitant because I know that anyone who knows how to spell my first name easily find me :o/. I've now developed a habit of creating accounts using my middle name instead.

  • My name and all my siblings' names are spelled correctly. However, my mom informed me that if she had three girls, the names she picked were Melinda (me), Melanie (my sister), and Mellory. She wanted to keep the 'Mel' theme going. I quickly told her how awful that was and I'm secretly glad I was the firstborn.

  • Yep. My name is Cayleigh, which is fairly youneek no matter the spelling. My dad wanted to spell it Ceilidh, which is the Gaelic speeling, but my mum talked him into Cayleigh. I do have to spell it out for everyone, and even as I am saying "C", they are already writing "K", but it doesn't really bother me and I love the spelling of my name.

My nickname is Susy.  People are constantly misspelling it 'Suzy' or 'Suzie'.  I wish my parents would have gone with the more common spellings just so I wouldn't be forever correcting people.

  • Kind of, my name is Lyndsey.  There are so many ways to spell the name though so regardless of how my parents spelled it I would still have people ask how to spell it or spell it wrong all the time.  I have met quite a few others who spell their name my way too, so I guess it is not that weird.  I like how my parents spelled it, but had they done Linzee or something like that I would  wish they had stuck with a more normal spelling.
