Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Neosporin ok for 2 month old?

DD is a very big baby.  Under the fat rolls on either side of her neck are raw spots, most likely where spit up has dripped (she has reflux with a lot of spit up). I try to keep these areas clean and dry but they don't seem to be getting any better. Any suggestions? We see the pedi next week for her 2 month appt but I don't want it to get worse by then.

  • Use aquaphor, not neosporin.

  • I would call the pedi, how raw is it?  could you pat the area with cornstarch so it won't get raw?  Make sure you are using a gentle cloth to wipe the formula away after every feeding to keep babys skin dry.

  • If it's just raw and red you can use Aquaphor, A&D or Vasaline.  If it's also got a smell and discharge you'll need to use athletes foot cream.  Keep it as clean and dry as possible.  We used powder to keep it dry once we cleared up the "cheese" but it actually irritated her skin more.  We've been living in bibs, changing them frequently, and I keep a soft cloth close by to wipe her neck/chin often.

  • I happened to be at the pediatrician's office when I scratched his face really bad with my ring while getting him out of his carseat. She suggested just to put a dab of neosporin on it, and it cleared up by the next day. He was only 6 weeks at the time....

BUT- that happened to a friend of mine's baby and she did Desitin on it.

  • Thanks! It does have a slight smell which worries me. It pink raw, not red. I'll use some Aquaphor and maybe a dab of diaper rash cream?  I've been neurotic about keeping it clean since I found it.  I'm glad she's big and healthy but her cute little rolls are becoming a problem haha :)
  • Neosporin was recommended by our Pedi for a scratch my LO had. So I know it is safe for babies. However, not sure if it would be appropriate for what you're describing...you may want to just put a call in to your Pedi :)
