Britax B-Safe Owners

DD is now on the highest shoulder strap setting, but she seems to have plenty of space above her head before she reaches the one inch mark and needs a new seat.  At some point have you/do you take out the polka dotted insert or does that always stay?  Seems like the shoulder straps will become an issue before her height. Thoughts?

I don't have that seat, but if it's the infant insert, they usually get removed around 11lbs. You'll have to check your manual. Removing it will probably give you more strap room too. The straps should be just below her shoulders. Is this what you're doing? I haven't had to move DDs straps up yet and she's pretty tall, but we have a Chicco

  • Yes, we keep them below her shoulders.  Geez, how is it possible we're on the last slot of four?  Before we moved them, they were like three inches down her back, where the straps come out of the seat.

  • I'm not familiar with this seat but that doesn't sound right. We have a Graco snugride 32 and my son never reached the top strap slot and E is still in the bottom strap slot.

The slot should be at or below her shoulders, not above. If you have an insert in I think I would remove it and see if that makes a difference.

  • OK this was bothering me!

I was thinking more about it...the slots need to be at or below the shoulder, so as she grows as long as she is within the limits of the seat for height & weight (so not within an inch of the top of the seat) then the to pslot will still be below her shoulders. So it is fine, is what I gathered.

And because I have OCD I did a little research, the insert stays in for the duration of use of the seat. Hope that helps!

ETA:I would really be careful to ensure that top slot is actually below her shoulder tho and not above. Unless she is super long torso'd I still think it sounds crazy that she's at the top. From the descriptions on car-seat . org it sounds like that insert is rather floppy and I wonder if it may distort your view. In my son's convertible we have to be careful of this.

  • The polka dot insert slides up so that the side flaps are next to baby's head. Not sure if you can take it out completely.

  • The shoulder straps won't be an issue (just make sure they are AT or BELOW her shoulders) at all. The seat is outgrown by either hitting the weight limit, or when there is less than an inch of hard shell above their heads. The head pad stays in and doesn't have a weight limit on it. The crotch strap DOES have a weight limit on the inner position though, so if your baby is more than 11lbs then you need to move it to the outer position.

  • We have this car seat and the polka dot insert isn't supposed to be removed. It moves up and down with LO, it's in the users manual..

Edit - we are only on the second one from the bottom, your LO must be long!! L was 23 inches at her 2 month appt.  I had looked up the insert part when someone posted about removing it.

  • Thanks for the input, the strap is still below her shoulders even after we adjusted.  Maybe I'll try and adjust the insert to see if I can figure out what is going on.  I know the rule about where the straps should hit, it just was significantly below her shoulders to warrant moving up.  I think it's weird too since she technically should be able to use this seat for much longer.
