So, if I need to supplement what formula can I use. I'm confused by the difference between Alimentum and Neocate (and the price difference). What is the best option for a very sensitive baby?
The difference between alimentum/nutramigen lipil and neocate/elecare/nutramigen AA in short is that the latter are for the very sensitive kids. Alimentum and nutramigen lipil have dairy protein broken down so that it is not supposed to be recognized by the body but there are still things that kids can react to (corn and casein for example). The neocate/elecare/nutramigen AA is amino acid based and does not have any casein etc in it that the body could/should recognize. My DD went from BM on an elimination diet to alimentum and did SIGNIFICANTLY better but after 5 weeks still had major reflux, some anal fissures, and 2 bloody poops, so is now on neocate.
Alimentum or nutramigen lipil runs about $27 dollars on the shelf at Target for a 16-ish oz can.
the AA formulas are found in the pharmacy (though you don't need a prescription), and cost $45-55 per 14-ish oz can. Some insurance companies will cover an AA formula with a prescription and some will deny coverage.
You might try the cheaper stuff first - if she doesn't tolerate it, then you can move onto either Elecare or Neocate. PP has it right about the ingredients.

how is your lo doing on neocate? i suspect we may be headed down that path. we have been on nutramigen for 5 weeks and although i see improvements, we still have really mucousy stools (one with noticeable blood streaks--not many, but still) horrible diaper rash and congestion which i thought was a cold, but is lingering. we are not meeting with our pedi until august, but may be referred to a pedi gi before then. hope your lo is doing better on neocate
