Parents of kids in Catholic school question

Ok some background. SD is 4 and will not start kindergarten until 2013 but she attends daycare at a Catholic school, which she was enrolled in without DH`s knowledge or consent.  We have no CO and DH is not religious so he does not agree with the decision but feels like there is not a lot we can do until we go to court. He has always paid for half her childcare and even though he wants her in a regular daycare then a public school, he is afraid to refuse to pay. Now BM emailed DH`s that she just got a bill for SD`s school due 7/9 for $320.00 and that she wants us to pay it since she paid for SD`s dance camp for the summer. (She enrolled her without DH`s knowledge or consent and expected us to pay, uhh no. SD says it`s boring and she hates it.) So here is where the question comes in, how can they charge you tuition in the summer? What could we be paying for two months early?

Re: Parents of kids in Catholic school question

  • We don't have kids in Catholic school but I know many of the religious schools around here either have a summer program which could be cause for the bill or some charge the amount for a 10 month program over a course of 12 months.

I would not be paying any extras without a CO. It sets a precedence.

  • Yeah she is not attending any summer programs there. So i don`t understand the bill. It was not this way last year.

  • Tuition for one school year can be paid over 11 months (i.e., first payment is in July 2012 and last payment is May 2013).  So while she may not be attending in the summer, payment for the school year is beginning.  This is the case for my daughter.

This was the same daycare she attended last year and this was not the case then but who knows maybe things changed.

I would call the school and ask how they do the billing.

I agree with this.  Also, she should have known there was a bill coming to give you guys more than 5-6 days notice.  That part seems fishy, as well.

  • call the school, ask how they are being billed.  or request a copy of the bill from BM. without a CO, and considering your DH doesn't consent, I personally wouldn't be paying for it.

can you go online and do a CS calculator for your state to see what DH should be paying for CS? then write checks (and photo copy them to have proof) for CS, so when/ if you do go to court he can show his support.

  • My son is in Catholic school. We pay his tuition over 12 months to make it more affordable. There are also enrollment and book fees. We paid all of those in May for the upcoming school yr though.

This.  I wouldn't pay for it if he doesn't consent.  He has rights to decide where his child will go to school.  She can call him to court for it, but they'll likely uphold his rights.  Also, agree with documenting proof of support that he is paying for CS.

We will print copies of our CS checks for court. I will talk to DH and our lawyer to see the best way to proceed. BM always waits until right before my DH should have visitation before springing these kinds of issues. She is big on using threats to get her way.

  • It could be anything - tuition starts early payment, it could be fees, etc.  If you do not want to ask BM for proof then call the school and explain that he is the non-custodial parent and is being asked to pay a bill this month and he wants clarification on what the bill is and how much money it is for.  It is very likely a real bill, Catholic schools charge more than just tuition.  And while I was raised Catholic I do not plan on sending my kids to Catholic school or religious education, this young age they will not learn much religion at all and for daycare (I assume she is a young preschool age but might be wrong), it might really be better than a lot of the daycare based preschools.

  • When DS was in elementary school he attended the Parochial school affiliated with our Catholic Community. Tuition could be paid in one of 3 ways: 1) one lump sum w/a discount, 2) 2 equal payments w/smaller discount or 3) 10 equal payments.

That said, the others are right, without a CO he should not be paying for any extras. I would call the school and ask about the payments before agreeing to anything. And I would also get with that attorney and get a formal CO in place to protect everyone.

  • My DD goes to Catholic school and we need to sign the contract by march 1 and return it with the first payment for the following year.  We are then billed the first of the month for the next nine months.  So essentially, by the time Sept 1 rolls around, we have paid 6/10ths of her tuition for the upcoming year.  We are paid in full for that school year by Dec.  No payments in Jan or Feb and then we start over in March paying for the next year.

It makes sense, if you think about it.  Your largest property tax bill is the one you pay in the summer.  That is because a huge portion of that tax bill gets sent to your school district for the upcoming school year.  There are a lot of expenses, especially in the start of the year to get all the books, supplies, etc.  A private school doesn't get  that big influx of tax dollars prior to the start of the school year so they have to start collecting tuition early in order to fund all the school year start up costs.
