"tummy hurts"

For almost 2 weeks, on an almost daily basis my daughter has been telling us that her "tummy hurts". I think it legitimately hurt the first day... she went poop several times and had a few loose stools. But now I don't know. Some days I believe her, and some days I think she is just staying it. I have no idea what to think!? I mean, it's possible she swallowed something that got stuck, but wouldn't it have gotten progressively worse? There are so many what ifs!? What would you do?  Would you just take her to the doctor? I just can't tell if she is just saying it, or it actually hurts.

Re: "tummy hurts"

  • Well, after talking it over with DH we decided to make an appointment. Better safe than sorry. Hopefully my daughter is just a hypochondriac.

  • That's a tough one.  DS will tell me his tummy hurts when he needs to poop or if he drank a slurpee to fast ;)  Does she just say it and go about her day or does she hold her tummy and kinda act less like herself?  If you think it may be legitimate, I'd bring her in.  Better to be safe than sorry.

  • DD also tells us her tumme hurts when she needs to poop.

  • After talking with the doctor, we do think that the bowel movements may be what it is. The timing seems right, and would explain it. He suggested we add more fiber to her diet to keep her moving easier (especially since we are PTing). And the visit wasn't a total waste as she was complaining last night about her ear hurting, and the poor thing has a double ear infection.

  • My daughter has mentioned that her tummy hurts typically on the way to or from daycare and we've figured out that she's hungry....i guess she hasn't quite figured out for herself that that her tummy ache is hunger pains. As soon as she eats she's fine.

  • Glad you feel better after pedi visit!

One thing I do when my kids say something hurts and I"m not sure if it is true is I run through other body parts...does your leg hurt? your head? your elbow? More times than not I get confirmation that some random body part (elbow, knee) hurts and I give kisses to all the 'hurting parts' and they usually just move on.
