Baby Names

How would you pronounce Anika?

I love the name.  Variants are Annika or Annica.

Also, any nicknames you can think of other than Annie or Ann?

 Thanks!

  • I'd pronounce it as AH-KNEE-Ca.

My dd (age 9) is Annica (Ann -ick - a) - and yes, it's is after Star Wars - Anakin - my husband is a huge fan- and about half the time if not more people start out with On-ick-a and DD corrects them.  We teasingly call her Ah-knee-qua since we both think it is quite a leap to that name from her spelling but sometimes it happens,  Very rarely does anyone shorten it, but DD likes Annie, never thought of shortening it to Nicki. I have to admit that people seem to love her name and we have gotten many compliments over it and I am happy that so far she has never met another person with her name.  In fact, now I am having a hard time coming up with a name for our soon to be DS, nothing measures up.

This.  Annika is our DDs name, and she was named after my grandma from Sweden.

Her nickname was going to be Annie, but DH started calling her Nika and it stuck (my mother hates this as her nickname, but oh well :) )

I've seen Anika pronounced A-n?e-ka, but only in African American communities, as a name completely different from the Swedish Annika or German Anika.

  • @TKtravels: What is it a nickname for?  (My Mother's family is polish.)  Does it have a particular meaning?
