Babies: 3 - 6 Months

not baring weight on legs

Hello :)

My LO is almost 5 months old and does not bare weight on his legs when I hold him upright. When is he on his back he kicks his legs like crazy.  I had my husband bring it up at his 4 month app. I could not go because I had no time left after maternity leave. The Dr said it is not a concern. My question is, when would it be a concern? At 5 months? At 6 months? I hate to wait to his 6 month app to ask again if things do not approve.

Does any once else have LO like this? I have consulted Dr Google and do not like what comes up.

  • You know, I wouldn't worry. Every baby seems to have his or her own developmental timeline, regardless of what the standard is "supposed" to be. How does your LO do during tummy time? That's a good leg strengthener as well.

Do you have a jumperoo or something similar? That worked wonders with my DD! At first she just sat in it and didn't understand the whole jumping concept, but after a few weeks she started jumping like crazy, and now she's in love with that thing. It's been great for building leg strength, as well as entertaining her for half hour periods while I get things done.

GL! I'm sure in no time your LO will start. You could always call your doc's office and ask over the phone if you're still concerned... never ask Dr. Google anything. He's so gloomy! lol ;)

  • I was also going to suggest the Jumperoo/Jenny Jump-up, exersaucer, or anything else that would have him put a little weight on his legs. Maybe he just needs a little nudging ;)

Try not to worry. You can always call your Dr. once he turns 5 mo and let them know the situation hasn't changed. They may have a different answer, or they may say it's normal. If you're still concerned, you can always get a second opinion.

  • My friends LO is 4 1/2 mo old and not at all baring weight on his legs. He is a big baby and I hear that can have something to do with it too. Just stand him up after every diaper change to practice. I would ask the pedi about it again if it has been a month since you asked.
