So, I've been so stopped up, nauseas, and had the worst heartburn that my doctor told me to lay off the prenatals until I started feeling better. The problem is, I feel so guilty about doing that. I've gone to every couple of days taking it and I took it today and it's is making me so queasy. Argh! Thanks for the vent!
Re: Prenatals are the worst
I'm taking Flintstones too with an extra folic acid pill.
Me too.
Its seems weird to me that your doctor would tell you to stop taking them all together.
Mine prescribed ones that are easier on the stomach and I take them at night. The y are called vitaMed md with quterfolic. They are a prenatal multi with a DHA softgel. They are super expensive though. I had to pay $50 for them and you have to get a prescription.
These are the ones my MW suggested, but the ones with DHA were $30 for a month supply! Too pricey for me, so I settled for Nature Made $30 for 5mo supply. And they smell so bad...
Op- have you tried taking them at night before bed??
I use to take the VitaFusion gummies, have you tried those? I felt great taking them, although toward the end I was able to taste the DHA which I wasn't a fan of.
Although the VF gummies don't have iron, so you'd need to take a supplement. This is where I encountered a problem. The iron supplements made me sick. I now take BrainStrong and love it - no supplements needed. It does make me a bit constipated so I've been taking colace a couple times a week, which seems to be helping.
I would agree with PPs, I'm surprised your doctor would tell you to stop taking them altogether, rather than give you another, easier option (VitaFusion, the Flinstone chewables, etc.). I'd go back to him/her and ask for advice.

I really don't think prenatals are as big a deal as a lot of people make them out to be. I mean, of course they're a good idea and folic acid specifically has been shown to have important effects, but we're already past that point of that.
Synthetic vitamins are hard for your body to absorb. You pee out most of it anyway. Whole food based vitamins are your best bet, but even then it's still not as good as getting your vitamins and nutrients from food. It's more complex than them isolating a vitamin and you just getting it from a pill, KWIM? As long as you're eating a healthy, well balanced diet you're unlikely to be deficient in anything.
If you're unable to take your current prenatals I'd absolutely recommend taking a whole food based vitamin as it's easy for your body to digest and absorb, but if not, I really wouldn't sweat it. Prenatals aren't magic little pills. They're a good idea, but the vast majority of us don't really need them to begin with.

The Folic Acid and the Iron in prenatal vitamins are the main essentials to needing them in Pregnancy. And most people aren't getting enough in their diets, even if they're on a well balanced eating plan.
