Castor Oil Clicky Poll

Re: Castor Oil Clicky Poll

  • Thats the one method I wont try.  My friends mom is a l&d nurse and she said it can cause your lo to bm before birth.  Thats just a big risk im not willing to take.

Another friend of mine said it didnt work for her...just gave her awful runs for 2 days.

  • Castor oil crosses the placenta and can make your baby pass meconium in utero. It also causes wicked diarrhea for you, which can dehydrate you and make your labor horrible, if it actually does induce labor.

More likely you will will be crapping your brains out for hours and still have no labor.

  • My mom was induced with castor oil by her OBGYN doctor in 1977 (when I was born) at 42 weeks. I used it myself when I had my daughter. I drank 4 oz. No meconium and no stomach cramping... and I am extremely sensitive to laxatives like Correctol & Exlax. Those make me want to vomit and give me horrible abdominal pain...due to having IBS w/constipation my entire life. Castor oil did not do that to me at all. I just had the runs for a few hours -- not 2 days. The contractions didn't even start until after my business was done. I think I drank it around noon and went poo until about 3pm. Contractions started at 4:30 and my daughter was born the next day - no issues. This was done 1 day before my due date, second child. Every time I see these posts about castor oil I feel like I have to tell my story because it worked for me and was not an unpleasant experience at all. Same thing with my mom - no issues.

I have done it 2/3 of my pregnancies and it worked both times.  I would do it again.  never had an unpleasant experience.  My dr says babies that have a BM are already in stress its NOT the castrol oil.  I always recommend to ppl to talk to your dr before you drink it!  But I think its fine

  • (lurking) I don't think I would do straight castor oil or castor oil in a milk shake or something, but my MWs swear by a mixture called Lemon Verbena. It's lemon verbena, castor oil, apricot juice, and almond milk. Apparently the combination of the ingredients is very gentle on the mama, but has a very high success rate for labor. Under the guidance of my MWs I would definitely use it before facing a medical induction.

  • one of my SIL's did this (along with other stupid nonsense) and her baby was born premature, and has had all kinds of health problems since resulting in over 25 surgeries. not saying it was solely caused by this but id just avoid it all together and let baby come when they're ready.
