what do you think kicks mean?

When your baby kicks, do you interpret it as s/he is happy/likes what you're doing?  Unhappy/doesn't like what you're doing?  Hungry?  Bored?!  I'm just curious if anyone thinks there's a pattern to it at all.   I imagine there's really no way of knowing, but I was wondering what you ladies think your baby is thinking when it's kicking.

Re: what do you think kicks mean?

  • I always assume it's because he's happy or likes what I am doing/eating haha.  My husband always points out, what if he's actually in pain or something?!?! But I always just assume he is playing or has energy from whatever I ate haha.  I think it clearly shows who is the optimist and who is the pessimist in my relationship haha

  • The only time I question it is when I lay on my side and she goes nuts, I always wonder if I'm squishing her foot or cramping her up. I hope I don't sound weird now.

I totally think that too!!  That's what prompted me to ask the question.  When I'm lying on my right side (yes, yes, I know it's better to be on the left), I always feel her kicking more than when on my left.  And that's exactly what I wonder--am I crushing her.  But then I think, well maybe it means she prefers that side and she's happy.  Yep, I sound weird now, too!

  • The only time I think she doesn't like something is if I lay briefly on my stomach and she starts kicking.  I think she's like "Whoa, Mom!  Get off me!"  Otherwise, I take her kicks as a normal part of her routine or that she liked the little coffee buzz she just got. Wink

  • Yeah, my first impression is that he is happy over what ever is happening or a loud noise has startled him.  But mostly happy.

  • I always feel kicks the strongest about 10-15mins after meals, so I always assume he is just super excited to eat!

Honestly it kinda depends on her kicks. When she is quiet, then I use my doppler and she spazzes, I figure she is pissed that I woke her up. LOL But when she taps back whrn Husband play with/talks to her, I think she likes playing with him.

  • I always assumed he wants to play, or when he kicks after I eat something Im guessing he like the food! I always wondered if babys can dream yet? I doubt it, but its still cute to think about

according to an app i have, babies can dream starting at like 16w or something. :) My sister says they dream about mommy and daddy, and playing with the angels. :)

  • I think it means different things.  For example, I think the trick of getting kicks by drinking lots of ice water is getting a startled "whoa that's cold!!' reaction.

I think hyper periods for no reason or after meal times are happy kicks.

And one day when I didn't have any clean maternity pants to wear, and the hubby told me to squeeze into some of my pre-pregnancy pants if I could and make do. So I tried that, and the baby started kicking me fiercely all morning, right at the too-tight waistline! It was so obvious that the little one was uncomfortable and knocking on the inside of my belly like "Come on, mom! Gimme some room up in here!"

Finally I begged my boss to let me take my lunch early so I could run out and buy some maternity pants. Once I was changed into something that fit the baby bump properly, all the kicking stopped.

I'm increased risk so I have had lots of ultra sounds.  On my side I always lie on he doesn't move so much.  When the tech make me roll to the other side he goes crazy.  The tech could tell I mostly lie on my left.

  • This post made me chuckle.  I never thought about the reason for kicking, but I love all the cute reasons!  I always assumed it was the involuntary movements little babies do.  Like the hand/leg jerking.  But from now on I'm going with the idea that he's saying hi to me or that he's happy :)

  • Most of the time the majority of movement I have is after eating or.drinking something so I usually assume its due to that. Then in the evenings I feel a ton of movement so that would be when the baby is awake I guess. I assume that's the sleep schedule.

  • I assume he's either not liking being constrained- he kicks a lot when my seatbelt is on or he's just moving around to get comfortable, or just the involuntary random movements

This is me, he goes crazy when I go to bed at night and lay on my side, so I dont think he likes it.  When I prop myself leaning back with a pillow he relaxes and I can sleep.

  • I definitely think our little guy startles awake a lot. The first kick I feel when he wakes up is always the hardest like it's just a reaction and then the rest are just little kicks. It will be interesting to see if he has a big startle reaction when he comes out.
  • I assume it's because he is responding to me. I talk and he kicks... :) Or that he likes whatever I just ate.
