2 babies, 1 heartbeat - vanishing twin? :(

our first ultrasound was yesterday. Baby A had a great heartbeat (170bpm) and measured about 9 weeks. Baby B measured about 7.5 weeks with no heartbeat.

Has this happened to anyone else before? I feel like I should give up all hope that MAYBE, just maybe, they are wrong....but there's a part of me that believes they are. Wishful thinking?

It's all bitter sweet. I am happy that Baby A is so strong...but so sad that baby B doesn't seem to be making it.

Advice? Thoughts? :(

  • I do not have any experience with this, but I know others here have had experience.  It seems that most people have the experience that the heartbeat is found at the next one.  However, one of my best friends experienced the vanishing twin.  She was sad for a little, but really she was so thankful that her Baby A came through strong.  Her little Baby A entered school this year.  Smile  HUGS.  I wish the best for you.

  • I don't have any advice. Just wanted to say that my T&P's are with you and hope that there is a heartbeat at the next visit. Sorry you are going through this.

  • Hang in there, I know it can be scary! I by no means am a doctor, but I am currently carrying twins. Sometimes the doctor can't find the babies heartbeat that early. I know that weeks 10-12 are sometimes easier to find the heartbeat. Also, sometimes one of the babies is positioned where you can't get a good read on the heartbeat. Sometimes when doctor's perform ultrasounds that early, they can see a flicker, which is the babies heart is beating, but it just can't be detected a reading yet.

Hugs and my thought and prayers are with you :)

My next appointment will be in two weeks...I'll keep ya posted.

  • Granted this was earlier, but at 5w5d we had one heartbeat and one empty sac. We were told the second sac would most likely be absorbed. A few weeks later, we had two heartbeats.
