Baby Names

Do you like your own name?

While thinking about baby names all the time recently, I started thinking about the names of us moms or moms-to-be! Do you like your own name? I know lots of people who don't like their own name and I wonder which of our children are going to end up not liking their names either.

My name is Ashley and I love my name! Yes it was super popular and in the top 10 baby names for YEARS and I knew a lot of Ashleys growing up but it never bothered me. I think it's a pretty name and had a deserving spot in the top 10 :) kinda makes me rethink the names in the top 10 these days, maybe it wouldn't be so bad!

  • I am Kassie~ and I dislike my name. Everyone assumes it is short for Cassandra or Cassidy. Which I would have prefered, with the nick name Cassie ...with a K of course because my mom and dad liked it that way.

I don't hate it but when I was a kid I tried to get people to call me by my middle name instead (Brooke).

I like my name ok - it's Melissa

My major problem with my name is everyone ends up just calling me Michelle.

I like my name, I have to spell it for people and correct pronunciation but it isn't crazy popular and it suits me.

  • My name is Elisabeth Cecilia.  Named after both grandmas.  I go by Beth usually.  I do love my name.  I often run into other Beth's or Elizabeth's, and my name gets misspelled often.  I sometimes get called Liz... which I could never be because there is no Z in my name...!  My name has huge significance to me and I definitely love it.
Anniversary DS was born 11/30/12... so in love :)
  • I am Andrea, and I like my name for the most part. I liked that my name was not overly popular, and I never had another Andrea in my class. There would usually be one other one in my school, but never in my class. I think it is a pretty and feminine sounding name (although it is a mans name in Italy, and probably some other countries).

My only complaint is that there are too many ways to pronounce it. I get called every version, even by people that know me well. For that reason, I answer to nearly any name that starts with an A. My husbands biggest complaint with my name is that it is 3 syllables. He thinks that is just too much to say :) His family has nicknamed me Ani.

  • My name is Lisa Marie

Everyone always asked if I was named after Elvis' daughter, which I wasnt. I dont mind it too much, but it is just too old fashioned for me. I dont know what Id prefer instead though, lol!

  • My name is Stacey and while I could've taken it or left it growing up, I like it more and more the older I get. Stacy without an "e" ranked in the low 40s the year I was born and my spelling would've been considered you-neek back then. I've always loved having a less common spelling; just would've liked more nn options. I can't imagine another name fitting me as well.

  • My name is Lauren. I didn't like it as a kid, but I like it now. There was only ever one or two other Lauren's in my class, so it wasn't too popular.

  • I used to hate my name. No one ever pronounced it correctly. It was always TAM-ara or Ta-mare-a. Then when I told them it's Ta-MAR-a they would say "But what about today?" Then crack up at their own dumb joke. I like my name now, but it's made me choose easy to pronounce names for my children.

  • I'm Briana Lynne and I love my name. There was only one other Briana in my school growing up and I've only ever met a few. I know the name is more popular now but when I was little in the mid-80's it wasn't as much. Lynne is a family name for me and I love it as well. I like that its a little different with the E at the end.
  • Carolina (long e). It has been mispronounced my entire life and ppl even call me Caroline. I went by Carol when I was younger. At my current job (7+ years), I have always went by Carolina. All my co-workers refer to me as that. Family and friends call me Carol.

My name is Katrina. I like my name. I think it's has strength and femininty. I hate to think of people shying away from it because of the negative connotation it has due to the hurricane.

  • I'm a Cayleigh and I love my name. I know people on this board can't stand it and say it doesn't age well, but I'm 25 and still just as happy with it. My only issue has been that EVERYONE spells it Kaley. Even as I'm saying "C", they are already writing "K". It doesn't make me wish I had a different name or spelling though; I love the way my name is spelled, and I do think it looks much better than Kaylee or Kaley or any of the other variations you see today. Technically I know it's the same name, but it doesn't seem the same to me. (I think it also helps that my dad is very very Irish, so it's not just a random trendy name that they chose. Although he did want it spelled Ceilidh!)

I did go through a phase where I wanted to be called by my middle name (Dawn), but I think it had more to do with being 8 and difficult than with not liking my first name.

  • My name is Laura Elizabeth after Laura Elizabeth Ingalls (Little House on the Prarie). I've always loved my name. I love to read and I have read the books a million times.

I've never been that big of a fan of my name but it's alright I guess. Kimberly is just way too common for growing up in the late 80s early 90s

  • I like my name (Caitlin), but I don't like that so many people have gotten kreatyv with the spelling of it, so now people misspell my name alllllll the time. I'd say about 3/4 of the time I say I'm 'Caitlin with a C' people spell it correctly, and the rest of the time- even if I spell the whole thing out, emphasizing that it's Caitlin with a C and an I- it gets spelled Caitlyn. Even when I send someone an email, signing my name as Caitlin, I get emails back addressing me as Caitlyn. FFS, it's not like I'm spelling my own name wrong! My MIL still spells my name as Caitlyn after 3 years. It's one thing if random people you'll never meet again spell your name wrong, but when MIL does it I feel like it is a lack of respect to keep misspelling my name.

  • I don't absolutely love my name. Rosalie  is a little formal, but I like the sound of it. I go by Rosalie most of the time. Only my husband, best friends, and family (except parents) call me Rose. I prefer Rose on certain occasions, but otherwise I love my name.

I'm Aimee too, not named after the song though.  I don't really care for it, just because nobody ever spells it correctly, even after I correct them.  I wouldn't mind Amy though.

  • Yes, I like Heather.  It was at its peak at #3 the year I was born so it was very trendy, but I never had another Heather in my class until college. It doesn't have the greatest reputation (bitchy), but I always thought of it as a great Scottish name which complemented my red hair and my McLastname.

I love it. I feel like it's a proper first name.

However, I've always been Jackie and that's just okay to me. I actually prefer when friends & family call me Jac.

  • My name is Meredith. I wasn't a HUGE fan growing up ... never thought it was very pretty. But, as I've gotten older, I have come to really like it (good job Mom and Dad!). Not too many Merediths in my town growing up, and it ages well.

I had the nickname Mere (pronounced Mare) ... SO happy my parents didn't opt for Merry. Uggh.

  • It's ok, but not my favorite. It's Candace. I was the only one in my class which was nice, but it's ok. I only went by it while I was in school, and most everyone calls me Candy. I introduce myself as Candy and I always get asked if I'm a stripper. No, I'm an elementary teacher!

  • My name is Kristine, pronounced Kristina.  It has irritated me over the years that people call me Kristy, Kristin and Kristine (how it's spelled).  I get why they wouldn't pronounce the e, but I don't get how people get Kristin or Kristy from that.  Not to mention, everyone tries to spell it with a Ch.  I actually go by Kris just to make things easier.  I'm not the biggest fan of the name.
  • My full first name is Shelby-Lynne. I hate both parts but I only go by Shelby. And even then I don't like my name. I've always hated it.

  • I'm a Christine and I love it
  • My name is Kerry. I am indifferent about my name. I think it's silly that my mom spelled it the masculine way. I like Carrie better. She thought a "K" and a "Y" was prettier... I side-eye her to this day but I don't hate it. I'm glad I don't have a super common name from the 80's.

  • I'm a Heidi, and I hated my name growing up.  I'm still not a huge fan of it but I've accepted it after almost 30 years.  haha.  I wanted to be a Sarah, Jessica, Amanda when I was younger because Heidi was "weird" apparently, but now I'm ok with it.  Only thing I am still annoyed about is that there are no nicknames for it, which was my mother's intention.  She wanted a name that couldn't be changed at all.

  • Crysta

No, not Crystal, just Crysta. Overall I do like it. I never had anyone else with my name (besides the Kristen's that were in my class). Obviously spelling has been a huge issue. I normally get Krista or Crystal.

I have a weird sibling paring with my brother being Alex.

I gave DD a "real name" that wasn't too popular, because I don't want her to be 1 of 1000 emma's or sophia's in her class.

  • My name is Ashley, too, and I really like it, although I can't picture myself with any other name, you know?  Even though it was super popular like OP said for years, it works. I'm the only Ashley at work and have no close friends with the same name. Thank goodness my parents spelled it the traditional (although originally male) way so I don't have to correct people.
