do you give solids b4 or after nursing/bottle?

my dr told me to give before. in the morning i give after b/c she likes to nurse first but at night i've been giving before & i think my supply is pretty much down to nothing at night. :( i am only bf'ing morning & night so i'm going to try to switch back to nursing b4 & hope the supply re-establishes.

my dr also told me that by her 9 month appt, he wants her to only be taking 18-20 oz per day- did your dr's tell u that also?

Re: do you give solids b4 or after nursing/bottle?

  • All of that is the opposite of what I do. Granted, I never asked the pedi his opinion, I just sort of do whatever works for LO.

DD wakes up hungry and won't even consider taking solids until after she's had a bottle. She has a bottle around 330 at daycare so I will give her "dinner" of solids before her evening nap and then she has another bottle before she's down for the night.

She's taking 35 oz. of formula a day, but my goal is to lower this a little... we just started solids and she's only taking about 3 oz. on a good day currently.

  • I give solids after nursing. Also if you BF you should still be doing at least 6 or 7 nursing sessions a day.

So in the morning we BF until he has both boobs drained and then he eats 4oz of fruit. He snacks off and on until 'lunch' where he drains both boobs again and then has 4 oz of veggies and then back to snacking when he feels like it and then he has 'dinner' where he again drains both and has 2oz of fruit and 2oz of veggies and finger foods. He then snacks until its bed time.

i weaned down to only bf'ing morning & night, i give formula the rest of the time. it works for me & my friend also does it. there is an article on kellymom about it. so she doesn't snack the rest of the day on the breast, she gets 2 6 oz bottles during the day.
  • I really think you just go by what LO dictates.  My pedi told me that I decide WHEN he gets solids, LO decides HOW MUCH he gets.  KWIM?  At 6 months solids should be gradually introduced.  I really don't think you can go wrong so far; LO is still getting what they need via formula or breast milk.

KWIM = know what I mean

I give T a bottle of breast milk then I wait about an hour (sometimes less depending on his cues) then offer cereal or fruit. He gets a veggie at lunch or dinner but it varies upon his naps. Some days he eats more than others.

  • I had been nursing first, then offering solids. Today for some reason I decided to try solid before nursing... and it failed miserably. LO ate but was fussy the whole time, and is still fussy as I'm trying to nurse him now.

  • His Dr. told me to give solids first and nurse after, but the LC tells me nurse first and solids after.

So with that conflicting info, I went with the LC because she knows more about BF. "Food before one is just for fun", so baby should still be getting most of their calories from BM or Formula.

So, I nurse/give bottle first, then solids maybe 15-20 minutes after that.

  • we give solids first because otherwise he has no interest. 2oz solids and then 5oz bottle. we can give the 5oz bottle first and he won't even entertain the thought of eating solids if we do it after.

  • Right now we're trying solids right after his mid-day nap, which is about lunchtime for me.  It's between bottles, but if I had to choose before or after I'd say "before" most of the time.  He's getting bottles every four hours.  But he just turned 6 months so I'm sure our routine will change as we add more solids.

  • I do whatever.  In the morning, she nurses first and gets breakfast when she gets to daycare.  Lunch - I think it's around the same time.  Dinner, she gets a bottle at daycare around 3 and I feed her solids when we get home around 5.

  • The NP/lactation consultant at our pedi office said to give solids before nursing, but that hasn't been working so well for us so I'm going to give the reverse a try.

  • DD gets solids between feedings. Pedi said her nutritional still comes from the milk and the food is just getting her used to different tastes and textures.

  • My dr told me to do solids then breast feed, but he wants him to have more milk so that didn't really make sense to me. I fill him up on milk and then do solids so he's gets more milk than solids.
