annoyed sex vs. gender rant

ok i think this might just be the hormones but i really think its annoying how upset people get if you say your finding out the gender of your baby and not the sex of your baby really? cause people arnt critical enough these days now they have to make "gender" and "sex" two different things, as of right now my babies gender is boy and his sex is boy he isnt influanced by the world yet and if he has a pen!s its a boy if she has a va jay jay its a girl i just really wish people would get over the whole gender vs. sex thing, phew ok i fell better. TIA for listening.

Re: annoyed sex vs. gender rant

  • I agree. I made a post last night and mentiond gender and someone commented that its the sex not gender. and I thought oh my whats the big deal with what you call it.

  • I understand the concern on differentiating between the two. However, I think it's just easy to slip and say one or the other innapropriately when talking about what's going on right now in our lives. This isn't meant to turn into a debate imo. At least not at this moment in time. I had that conversation in college, I've yet to really have an issue with it in everyday life. But, again, I understand the incorrect use being upsetting. I just never pay attention personally. Not when talking about my new baby/pregnancy at least.

But since you shared your rant... here's mine.  I don't understand why people need multiple (say 4?!?!) tickers for the same baby/pregnancy. They ALL say the same thing. It's a waste of internet space, and in an age where more and more people utilize phones and ipads for things like the bump, it's just annoying to scroll through.

Bahahha - at all of this . Love!

  • i appreciate everyones opinion i just had to get this off my chest and wanted to see where others stood personally i dont see the differance in the words and could care less which people say but it was just driving me crazy seeing people "correct" others post due to the whole "gender" vs "sex" thing.

     Why does it bother you?

Also, neither gender or sex are "influenced by the world".  My baby boy won't become a girl because because he's being influenced too, he also won't become gay or transgender because of "influence".  If he is gay it's because he's that way right now (obviously without "wordly influence").  So technically, although you don't know it yet, your child could be a different gender than what you think.

  • I agree with Bizzybo08 to me gender and sex on a baby are the same thing. and as for the idiot comment, me saying my babies gender is boy or girl doesn't mean I am one. Different parts of the world and even the United States use different words for different things.

  • It reminds me of the race vs. nationality thing. I get asked what my "nationality"is and people look at me funny when I say I'm American, just like them. There's a difference, and I use the opportunity to educate them politely because I think it's an important distinction to make.

When I went for me U/S they asked me If I wanted to know the gender. Its just what your acustomed to.

  • I didnt mean to start anything i was just wondering where others stood on the subject, the reason i ask is because my grandmother said gender the other day when asking me what we were having and i wanted to see what others say, also i was wondering if it was a generation thing or if people have become overly sensitive to subjects such as this. and as for the disection of my "i couldnt care less " comment let me clarify that i wont be losing any sleep over this discussion. thank you for all who are participating in this debate Big Smile

My rant is people who misspell on the internet.  I usually let it slide because many times it's just a typo that they don't feel like going back and correcting... but "arnt"?  Really?

p.s. Also, it's "influenced", not "influanced".

  • I find it telling those who are having a hard time understanding that sex and gender are two different things are also those who are struggling to string a thought together. Punctuation is your friend. As are dictionaries.

  • Its an English language tragady that alot of people make and are set in there ways, but here is the truth so you can decide for yourself. I hate when people always correct my spelling so I totally understand. Maybe this will help. Look at # 2

    gen?der

    noun
    1.
    Grammar .
    a.
(in many languages) a set of classes that together include all nouns, membership in a particular class being shown by the form of the noun itself or by the form or choice of words that modify, replace, or otherwise refer to the noun, as, in English, the choice of he  to replace the man,  of she  to replace the woman,  of it  to replace the table,  of it  or she  to replace the ship.  The number of genders in different languages varies from 2 to more than 20; often the classification correlates in part with sex or animateness. The most familiar sets of genders are of three classes (as masculine, feminine, and neuter in Latin and German) or of two (as common and neuter in Dutch, or masculine and feminine in French and Spanish). b.one class of such a set. c.such classes or sets collectively or in general.d.membership of a word or grammatical form, or an inflectional form showing membership, in such a class.
    2.
    sex: the feminine gender.
    3.
Archaic . kind, sort, or class.

    sex noun
    1.
either the male or female division of a species, especially as differentiated with reference to the reproductive functions.
    2.
the sum of the structural and functional differences by which the male and female are distinguished, or the phenomena or behavior dependent on these differences.
    3.
the instinct or attraction drawing one sex toward another, or its manifestation in life and conduct.

The big deal is that the words actually mean DIFFERENT things. Sex is determined by looking at DNA or what genitalia the individual has. Gender is determined based on social constructs. I don't create the definitions. I just use them. Correctly. Which many people do NOT do. One of my BFFs is dating a sexual female who identifies as a male. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. He is a male based upon gender. However, when he was born, they probably squealed "It's a girl!". DIFFERENT WORDS HAVE DIFFERENT MEANINGS. And using the wrong words when you know the right one makes you look like an idiot.

    THIS.  'Nough said.

  • imageStarBrite79:

Here, allow me to give an example:

I'm not going to go to IHOP and order a strawberry and cream cheese crepe when what I really want is a Happy Face pancake.  Sure, both are delicious breakfast foods, made extra delicious with a side of bacon.  But, even though they are both breakfast delights, they are, in fact, 2 different things.  A crepe is a crepe and a pancake is a pancake.  I can be saved from receiving something I don't want if I choose to use the correct terminology.

    Great analogy.  Well done.

  • The definitions of sex and gender have been defined, i'm happy to say I learned those here thanks to MandJS. I take the knowledge and spread the word instead of encouraging ignorance.  Just because it was said and done before doesn't make it right.

Secondly.  Vagina  VAGINA VAGINA.  If you can say Penis say Vagina.  Va ja ja, is for Grey's Anantomy.

    That is all.

So what is the baby's gender before being born, seeing as it has not had any  social constructs?

SEX is what is either dangling or not between the legs.

GENDER is part of your brain and psyche. A boy can be raised a boy, be given only male influenced toys, but still know that he is a female. It has nothing to do with world influence.

So, yes. There is a difference. And MandJS....lurve you!

umm pen!s and  va jay jay? Why?

It's penis and vagina, we are all adults here.

We're all adults here but it's my belief that "gender" became the big substitute for "sex" because people are afraid to say the word "sex". Just like they're afraid to say penis and vagina. I personally can not WAIT for all the sex announcements to be over so we can finally move past this discussion.
