VBAC

My OB scheduled me for a repeat c/s??!!!??

af2004rnaf2004rn member

As of my last appointment it was agreed that I was doing a VBAC. Baby was head down, no complications.

Today I got a call from the hospital for pre-op testing for my repeat c-section. I am shocked and hoping it's just an oversight and that they scheduled it by mistake. I have an appointment tonight and will hopefully figure out what is happening.

Don't get me wrong, having an eviction date is tempting. But the thought of surgery makes me shudder.

  • I have a csection scheduled even though I'm attempting a VBAC. My drs office will only let me go so long.  If I don't go into labor on my own by a certain date then I get a csection.

  • My OB's office had a c/s scheduled by 20 weeks, it was a few days past my due date (that's as long as they would allow me to go into labor on my own), from what I hear it's standard to scheudle a c/s for the date that they will allow you to go to.  this is part of the reason I switched to a Midwife practice that does VBACS, it was unsettling to me as well.

But they scheduled it for when I will be 39 weeks. Is he thinking I have to birth this baby naturally BEFORE it's due date? That's crazy!

ITA it's crazy and it was a really sneaky and unprofessional move to do that to you without discussion or warning.  I would have told the person on the phone to cancel it.

  • I would be upset if my OB scheduled one that early. I hope to have a VBAC, but I have a C/S scheduled for 41 weeks. That is as long as I can go.

  • If your OB agreed to try for a vbac then he/she shouldnt be scheduling a csec unless it is for after the due date. My OB said we would go to 41.5 weeks at the latest. After that we will do a csec if the baby hasn't decided to present itself. I haven't gotten a call that he actually scheduled it yet though.

If an OB is scheduling a VBAC for before or pretty much spot on the due date than that OB isn't giving you an option. I don't know how many babies come early or exactly on their due date but I know pretty much none do in our family.

  • It's time for a blunt conversation with your OB. It could just be his office staff's standard operating procedure - because let's face it, most women don't attempt vbac. So give him the benefit of the doubt, but get him to commit to exactly how long you can go if no medical issues crop up.

I did have a RCS scheduled - but for 41.5 wk. And honestly I wasn't sure if I'd show up for it or not. Fortunately I went into labor before that and never had to find out.

There could have been an office mix up.  Either way, I would have told the hospital it was a mistake, and call your OB's office.

I've heard my OB's office will put a c-section "on the books" around 36 weeks, for 7-10 days after your due date.  However, I'm going to try to avoid that, and only consider scheduling once I hit 41 weeks.  They told me they'd let me go 41 weeks, and I find it hard to believe that they are SO booked that at 41 weeks they won't be able to find a spot if necessary.
