How do you pronounce Mila? (Clicky Poll)

I'm totally at a loss for a name if baby #2 is a girl. Lately I've been liking Mila, but I'm concerned no one will ever be able to pronounce it.

My other question is . . . do you think it's a trendy name? DD1 is Lucy, which I consider semi-classic (I know it's gaining popularity), so I don't want a totally trendy name to go with it. I saw the suggestions that Kourtney Kardashian might name her daughter Mila in the post below because it seems trendy. Haha. What do you think? Too trendy?

  • The only Mila I know of is Mila Kunis, so I would pronounce it as she does: Mee-la.

    I thought this too, Mee-la.

  • My manager's daughter just named her DD this.  They say it Mee-lah.

Pretty name, but maybe a tiny bit on the trendy side.

  • When I see it, I read it as Mill-ah, with a short i. It looks like Mee-la is more common though.

  • I pronounce it mee-la, like the actress, and I think that her popularity and the boom of the names Mia and Maya have bolstered Mila's trend factor. I'm pretty sure that it was on SSA's list of "names to watch" in 2011. It's pretty, though.

This. I don't know any IRL, although I have a friend who was considering naming her baby Mila if it was a girl (turned out to be a boy). I really like it!

  • I hate names that you don't know how to pronounce based on the spelling. Even though I know Mila Kunis, I saw this and first said "My-la" in my head. And then it also looks like mil-ah to me too, even though I know it wouldn't be pronounced like that. But that's exactly why I avoid names like these.

Our friends named their daughter this.

Mom calls her Mill-a and Dad calls her Mee-la.

  • I like Mee-la better and I think that's the more obvious way to say it these days because of Mila Kunis. However, My-la would be just as acceptable.

  • I love it and say Me-la, DH veto'd it bc it's his friend's dog's name, grrr. I am not seeing how it's a trendy name at all.

  • Instinctively upon reading it I always want to pronounce it My-la (and do in my head), but knowing how Mila Kunis (and Milla Jovovich, though her spelling is slightly different) pronounces it, I would say it aloud as Mee-la.

I don't personally know anyone with this name, so I can't say how popular it is, but I would imagine if you're going for the Mee-la pronunciation it sounds a lot like Mia, which is quite popular.

  • Mee-la.  I think the first time I read it I might have thought it was Mil-la.  I would never think My-la.  I think of the actress, like most other people have stated.

I think it goes nice with Lucy.  I think it's definitely gaining.  Of the Mia/Maya/Mila suggestions I think Mila is the least popular and least trendy.  I don't think it's going to skyrocket.  It does seem like it's on a lot of people's lists on here, but so is Isla (one of many examples I could give).  Just because it appears on the list doesn't mean it's what they choose and therefore it doesn't add to the popularity.  It seems like a name that everyone wants to date but very few are actually marrying (IMO, a mark of a pretty good name- familiar but distinct!)

This exactly. Also, I have a 6-year-old niece named Mila. It is so perfect for her and I would consider it for a girl if we didn't already have one in the family. They call her Mimi sometimes as a nickname. I have also know one Myla that is high school age. I do think Mila is starting to rise in popularity, but it has nothing on the Isabella and Sophia type names when it comes to current trends. I don't think it will ever become "too" trendy.

  • I don't think it is trendy at all. I think it's a great name! (DH nixed it). I would pronounce it the first way. However, one of my spin instructors is Mila and she pronounces it the 2nd way.

  • We had a dog with this name and no one ever pronounced it correctly.  We never got Mee-lah, just My-lah & Mill-ah.  This was about 3 years ago.

  • I like Mila, but I do think it's probably more trendy than classic and not on the same level of classic-ness as Lucy.  I guess we'll see how quickly it climbs up the charts in the next 5 years though.
