Pregnant after a Loss

I failed the 1hr GTT

Boo! I'm so bummed.  My OB finally returned my message and told me that the results from my one hour came back abnormal and very high.  I see him tomorrow morning and he'll give me the paperwork to do the 3hr GTT as soon as I can.  For you girls that took the 3hr how was it? Any advice? I'm really hoping that I pass and that I don't have GD.

I failed the 1 hour (do you happen to know by how much you failed?) and went on to pass the 3 hour.  My advice is bring a laptop, book or something to do.  I was not allowed to leave during the 3 hour so I brought my ipad, texted my friends etc.

I felt nauseous after the first 45 minutes or so but made it through.  It sucks - I'm not going lie, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.  Make sure you have water and food for immediately after the test - you're going to want to eat and drink right away since you have to fast.  I hope you pass just fine.

No he didn't say by how much that I failed just that it was really high and I had to do the 3hr and if I fail the 3hr we will discuss my treatment options etc.  I'm just worried about not eating for that long and giving blood so many times.  I have a history of fainting etc. and usually bring juice and a snack for immediately after the blood draw but that's not really an option with this test!

I failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour. I think the time of day was a factor, because I had eaten all day with the 1 hour, but had the 3 hour first thing in the morning. Good luck to you!

  • I failed the 1 hr and went on to pass the 3 hr. I stayed up and cooked myself eggs and wheat toast at 11:30 pm :) I'm not sure if it really saved me or not but I'm borderline hypoglycemic so I knew not eating for that long would be very difficult for me. The draws weren't that bad but I don't have an issue with needles. The stuff you drink is worse than the 1 hour stuff and I did get really nauseous about 20 minutes after drinking it but then I was fine. I recommend bringing something to keep you busy, laptop, books, magazines whatever works for you. Also, bring something to eat and drink as soon as it is over because chances are you'll be starving and really thirsty. They won't let you drink anything during the test not even water to chase down the syrup :) Good luck!

  • Sorry to hear that :(. The way my OB's office does these tests, you can't eat or drink anything at all after midnight (not even a sip of water). I think they use the same glucose drink as the 1-hour. Definitely bring a book or something. For me, what made the whole thing bearable is that I was lucky and got the good phlebotomist - not the one who needs at least 2 needle sticks for each draw!

I've known lots of ladies who failed their 1-hour test and passed the 3-hour. I failed my 1-hour also, by 4 points, but I passed the 3-hour. Hopefully this will be true for you too - good luck!

  • Sorry to hear that you failed :( But if it makes you feel better I hear that lots of women who fail the one hour go on to pass the 3 hour no problem.
  • Ugh!! I remember the feelin well. I failed my 1 hour this time around as well.  I think my # was 56 & the cut off for normal was 34.  I went on to pass my 3 hour with flying colors!!

Immediately after I drank the stuff little but was bouncing off the walls.  It was actually a little painful.  Lol!! Poor girl was all sugared up :). After that I felt a little queezy, but that went away after about 45 minutes.  Definitely brin a book, ereader, laptop or something else to do.  It definitely helped pass the time.

Best of luck to you!!! I hope you pass!!

  • I also failed the one hour and am currently awaiting my three hour results.  My advice is to plan to have your blood work done as early as possible in the day, as you have to fast for 12 hours prior to the test.  The night before my test, I almost ordered fish at dinner but then remembered I am always hungrier in the morning after I eat fish, so opted for chicken instead.  So, try to eat a meal that will keep you from getting hungry as long as possible.  :-)

As other posters mentioned, bring something to keep yourself occupied between draws.  If you're anything like me, you'll want it to be fairly mindless, though, as I was quite queasy throughout the test.

    Good luck!
