"I know you're cding but register for some pampers"

Oooooooookay, MIL.  I'll get right on that.

"They'll be easier for babysitters and when you bring the baby down here."

Uh huh.

DH did step in and say, "Mom, the next time you come and visit we'll show you the diapers.  I don't think you understand what we're talking about."

Y'know, she's the only one we've been getting flack from.

She also said, "Oh, but they're (cds) so expensive!"  Yeah, ~$250 for 5+ months of diapers is so expensive.  I'm going to wait until she buys us that pack of pampers so she gets how expensive sposies are.

Re: "I know you're cding but register for some pampers"

  • MIL bought us sposies for the shower - in her defense, I don't know if DH told her about us using cloth, though.  I totally put my foot in my mouth at the time, and kind of said 'thanks, but we'll actually be using mostly cloth' in front of everyone (again, I don't know that MIL knew about the CD's, and she has since turned other expectant moms onto them).  I blame it on the fact that I was getting major flack from the person throwing the shower and had had enough...

Sorry that your MIL is being a pain.  And sorry to unburden my conscious in your thread... oops!

  • i find people extremely frustrating.  i have some cds on my amazon registry which everyone pretty much ignored anyway (the registry and the cds lol) and those that did buy off amazon weren't interested in the cloth and that's fine.  at our first shower we only had one person who knows we're doing cloth buy us a small pack of sposies but she got the 'pure and natural' ones and prefaced it with a long note on the wrapping paper about how she knows we're doing cloth but that she thought having some backup sposies would be a good idea for 'just in case' or emergencies or whatever.  and i was okay with that.  we have the second shower (for dh's side of the family) next weekend and his family is sooo....ugh.  he said if anyone would read our registry and see we're using cloth and buy sposies instead and scoff at us it'd be his family.  GREAT!

tell your MIL that you're well aware of the fact that people may buy you sposies regardless of your plan to use cloth but that you're certainly not going to invite them to do it!  and then maybe kick her.  just cuz i'm in that kind of mood.  lol.

Hehehe! I don't know either of your MIL's but I thought this was funny! :)

  • We buy packs of sposies each week and just keep them in the closet.  I like to really see how much we save.  This is the only way I can think of to do it.

  • Are our MIL's related!?  We got the same comment about how expensive they were.  "One diaper for $20?!"  Um, yeah.  But you don't throw them away.

She bought us 2 packs of Pampers before DD was born.  I donated them.  She gave up.

  • I hated these comments...I got them our entire pregnancy!  We got disposables for shower gifts (despite the fact people knew we were cding) and DH and I promptly returned them and used the money for other things!  That said, we do part-time disposables because of our babysitter BUT we use 7th generation so, of course, no one got us any of those.  LOL
  • I would totally be a *** and ask for a receipt so I could return them ... then again, pregnancy makes me mean and no one ever tried to talk us out of cloth Smile

I think this is the wisest way to deal with the situation.

    LOL!

  • i got this too. But i didn't register for any, and got some anyway. Granted, it was DH's grandmom, and a friend had given her a case of diapers that their grandchild had outgrown....

for my local/work shower, i made it clear that the only thing i really wanted/needed were CDs. And that's what i got. They were awesome and spent like $200-300 on a huge basket of MotherEase diapers from a local store.

My SIL made a diaper cake for me out of Gerber organic prefolds and sent her husband all the way across town to get a pack of 7th gen disposables for the bottom layers. I was actually impressed with how respectful some people were about our preferences.

we still get occasional inquiries as to whether we stuck with the CDs and i'm always so happy to say we have and why we love them so much.

  • I didn't register for diapers, but I still got them as gifts.  Walmart takes them back without a receipt if you need that as an option.
  • Ditto the Walmart, I've gotten money for sposies that way!  You get three returns w/o receipts per year, but you can return multiple things each time (I think), so take them all back at once and use the money for cute baby gear!

And I should consider myself lucky because I actually have very supportive parents and ILs, ILs even CD-ed all three of their boys, but my well-meaning MIL got me a whole starter kit of gDiapers at BRU for my shower.  I guess it'll be good to try them, but I'm not holding out much hope.

I hope they were bought from Wal-Mart otherwise...

  • I'm really glad we had some sposies lying around.

    You can always donate them.
