postpartum pre eclampsia?

or post eclampsia whatever its called. I hav it and its really scary. was just curious if there were any other moms that have been diagnosed with it and if you have any encouragment. right now I feel grateful im alive. when I went into er my bp was 187/125. but as its been almost 2 weeks later and still hanging around I feel so discouraged i will be on bloodpressure meds forever :(. anyone else?

Re: postpartum pre eclampsia?

  • My blood pressure was an issue before my babies, I've had hypertension since my early 20's so our situations are probably a bit different. I'm actually heading to the dr tomorrow for a PP blood pressure check and we will see what they say. In the hospital they quadrupled my normal meds in an attempt to get my BP stabilized- scary!  Good luck. If you have to be on meds it's not that bad and once they figure out what works for you rings should level out.

  • What were your symptoms?  Are they the same as in pregnancy?  I had it when pregnant with my 1st but not my second.  I have been getting bad headaches in the past week that's why I am curious?

  • thanks. I had higher blood pressure before when I smoked but when I quit it was normal. so a little scared. just frustrated. his medical assistant told me It could be temporary but to not stress about it. just took my bp and it was 117/67. but I took my bp meds at 745 am. I read somehwere it can last for as long as 3 months
  • yes I had headaches that came and went but it developed right after I gave birth and I was on 800mg of ibprofun every 6 hours there is no way I should have felt headaches. my vision also got weird almost like cloudy. for a week I blamed it on lack of sleep. went and got a bp machine adn took it for 2 hours every 30 minutes and my numbers were 167-175/103-107. called dr and he rushed me in to er thats when it was really high. they seriously need to let us know more about this its really scary. I knew about pre eclampsia but not this
  • I agree.  They always warn you about pre-e in pregnancy but you don't hear about it much after birth.  There should definitely be more awareness.  I hope you feel better soon!

  • I am so glad you caught it and are on meds for it. There really is no talk about postpartum pre-e and it is very serious. My step sister actually had a stroke a few days after giving birth, it was horrible. Thankfully she is alive but she spent a few weeks in a medically induced coma, had part of her skull removed until the swelling went down, and lots of time spent in the hospital doing rehab. Now 4 years later she is doing great but paralyzed on the left side of her body. Postpartum pre-e actually isn't all that uncommon but I feel as though no one ever warns you about it. I urge everyone to please go see your Dr if you have persistent bad headaches. You won't be on blood pressure meds for ever, once your body recovers from the birthing experience everything should go back to normal. Hang in there!
