DS2 had his hernia surgery at 8 AM yesterday. He did really well, but because he's under 28days old they keep them overnight after surgery to watch their breathing and heartrate. DS2 ended up spiking a fever for 12 hours post surgery of about 102degrees. This led to them drawing blood and collecting urine to culture and ordering a chest x-ray.
His CBC was fine, his chest x-ray shows some evidence of a viral infection. It takes 48 hours to culture the blood/urine. Then the peds dr came by today and recommended doing a lumbar puncture. He said anytime a baby less than 28 days old has a fever they (and the AAP) have the protocol of doing a lumbar puncutre to test for meningitis. 1-2% of all fevers in babies <1month is the result of meningitis. So then we had to hand him off for that. Thankfully, DS1 had that procedure also so we knew what to expect and they didn't have to sedate them.
So, as long as everything is okay we're probably be here till tomorrow night or Monday morning. He's getting antibiotics until the results come back negative.
The worst part was the stupid nurse. She argued with me about going to hold DS2 down during his blood draw. She said "it's so hard on these little ones, it will be way to hard on you". Uhm, I've held my DS1 down while sedating him, I held DS2 down on tuesday for a blood draw. When I tell you I am going with my baby, I am going with my baby.
Other than that, we're just trying to survive on no sleep (and hospital food). We only have room for 1 parent to sleep, the other has to sleep in a rocking chair. So we rotate every 4 hours.
This just adds to the "I can't get a break" feeling.
Re: Still in the hospital
I don't have a lot of time but i'm so sorry! Maybe if his 24 hour cultures are clear then chances are they may let you leave. If nothings grown at 24hrs then the 48 will most likely be clear. Did they give an antibiotic "just in case?"
M had lumbar's done when she was little for her fevers BUT they could NEVER get it!
Ugh--- I'm so sorry!!!!! So much for the "they do this every day" and should go smoothly thing. I feel so bad for you--I totally know that "can't catch a break" feeling...and it completely sucks. I hope you get a moment of peace for yourself...even a nice cup of coffee and a moment of just "relief" soon.
((hugs))

Notes:
I hope everything goes better soon and that you are home in a day or two! DD also had a full sepsis workup at 4 weeks old, due to fever. They had to do the lumbar and IV both twice, because they are so small at that age, and it was hard to get a good poke. I think I was crying harder than she was. I can't imagine not being with her through the whole thing! Good for you for having your mama instincts jump in and tell the nurse that there is no way you are going to not be around!
Do you have a McD's in your hospital? We did in ours, and we lived off of that! Horrible for you, I know, but way better than (some) hospital's food!
Hang in there! HUGS!
