Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Table food and allergy questions (i.e. toast, cheese, etc.)

I am starting to give my DS more table foods because he prefers to feed himself over purees. I want to start things like toast, grilled cheese, etc. I see lots of other people on this board feeding things to their babies like that. However, I thought they weren't supposed to have wheat, cows milk, etc. until they are a year? He has had yogurt so I am not as worried about the cows milk, but what kind of cheese do you give? Like, if I wanted to make toast with a piece of cheese would I use velveeta or something similar? I would hate to give him the overprocessed american cheese slices but they do melt so easily. WDYT? Thanks!

Oh, and any suggestions as to table foods your baby likes?

Re: Table food and allergy questions (i.e. toast, cheese, etc.)

  • for cheese, we use organic Am. cheese. She doesn't eat a whole lot at a time so I figured that's fine... I would think the Am. cheese slices, even not organic are probably much better then velveeta! no? Not sure what's in velveeta but it doesn't even need to be refrigerated...

Anyway, at DD's 9 mo. appt, pedi said the only things off limits were strawberries, honey, nuts. Everything else was a go, except whole milk at a year (other dairy is fine).

  • Actually, Velveeta is just as over-processed, if not more so, than American cheese....
  • since my child has food allergies . . our doctor said not to feed her cheese and dairy until a year. . .?

We have been feeding her cut up bananas, i've tried turkey and chicken . . i have cut up melon in the fridge to try this week. . i've also peeled grapes for her. . . she isn't allergic to wheat, so I will try toast in the upcoming months. . ?and www.wholesomebabyfood.com has some finger food ideas. . ?i've also still introduce a food a week and try to stay with stuff i've all ready introduced her.?
