Ugh. Toddler bed & naps, how do you do it??

So Luc is a sometimes napper.  Sometimes he will, most times he won't.  When he was in a crib, he'd usually just chill there for a couple of hours even though he could get out.  We switched to a toddler bed this weekend because he figured out how to climb in the crib and it just seemed ridiculous that he was still in one.  But now he's just jumping out of his bed and tearing apart his room.  I have to sit outside his room (I'm in the office now across the hall) to make sure he just doesn't play around upstairs.

If you can, how do you get your kid to stay in bed for a nap?  TIA!

  • Ben does the same thing. Some days he ends up not sleeping, keeping Emily awake and tearing his room apart. Most of the time he'll tear it apart, then lay down to nap. I just let him; I figure I deserve the child-free quiet time just as much as he needs to have a rest in the middle of the day. His room is baby-proofed so I know he won't hurt himself. I just make him help me clean up before he can leave the room. Also, we have one of those door-knob thingies to keep him from coming out without me knowing.

  • Yeah, I need those door knob thingies - at least he'd be contained, then.  I can hear him now in there playing with toys.
  • Did you convert your crib or take it down completely?  This is my biggest fear in moving dd to a bigger bed...she needs some alone time to fall asleep most days and I am sure she will stay in her new bed for .2 seconds.  I don't have any advice but I'm reading this because I am sure I'll need to ask the same thing.  Good luck!
  • We love that door-knob thing. He has no idea how to work it, but it makes TONS of noise when he tries. I feel less guilty that I'm essentially locking him in his room;) It's for his safety, though. The first time he got out without us knowing, he climbed on the counter and drank children's benedryl, then spent 5 hours in the ER hooked up to heart monitors.
