Rolling question/sleep

I can't believe I'm first asking this but it was never a problem. Lucas rolls both ways but really didn't like to. This past week he is rolling all the time, sitting up from laying position etc. He tummy sleeps and never ever once rolled in his crib. Now this week he wakes every hour because he rolls onto his back which wakes him and he screams. We flip him back but it never helps. He will not flip back himself and also has never in his life slept on his back. Did I miss something previously discussed on on how to deal with this. He finally is feeling better and ate and nursed great and already woke up an hour into sleep bc he rolled. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Re: Rolling question/sleep

  • Ugh. Well we had the opposite problem, she was used to sleeping on her back swaddled but when she started rolling and we stopped swaddling she would roll onto her belly and scream. That first week was torture, she was literally up about 12 times a night. It lasted for a few weeks, but now she sleeps on her belly all the time. As soon as I put her down in the crib for bed she rolls right onto her side and either right away or eventually onto her stomach. She still does not sleep as good as she did swaddled and usually wakes up 1-4 times but it's much better than it was.

To sum that up, unfortunately I don't think there is much you can do about it. He will get used to it eventually. To this day, A still will not roll onto to back. I know she can do it since she did it for ONE day almost 3 months ago, she just has absolutely no interest. Lucas will figure it out eventually, it's just new to him right now.

  • For us, rolling in the crib was just something we had to wait out. In the beginning it made her so upset. Maybe it even scared her a little. Now she still rolls, but it doesn't make her upset, and she just repositions herself how she wants. Sometimes she gets stuck in the corner and needs help, but not very often. I'm not sure what you could do to help though.

Haha, I ask because A only rolls to the left. Since that is the case, I do have one suggestion that I have tried a few times. Maybe you already do this but instead of putting him in the middle of the crib, try putting him against the side so that when he rolls he can't go all the way over, and will be forced to either stay on his side or go back on his stomach. Not sure if it will work but maybe worth a try?

  • Ugh we are going through the opposite as mentioned above. He hates being on his tummy and wakes up. Bad thing is that he can roll both ways but doesnt do the belly to back as much. Its funny he seems to do the harder one best. Anyway I was getting up alot and rolling him. Now I cosleep and out a small pillow down by his butt on the one side he rolls. I know this is flameable but he sleeps better and i dont worry about suffocating. Although I worry about EVERY thing else lol. Maybe try the pp idea. Hope they get used to it though.

  • The exact same thing happened with my tummy sleeper. She was doing so well with going to sleep on her own, etc... then she started rolling onto her back and all chaos broke loose. DH and I were so stressed out, we would watch her on the monitor and she would roll onto her back and start freaking out. So we'd go in and flip her. Well, we quickly discovered that this did not help because she'd just roll back over and start crying again. We let her cry for a bit on her back, and shortly after she started rolling back onto her stomach, or onto her side and sleeping that way. Now, all is good, better than before in fact, since she will snuggle around and get into whatever position she wants and then fall asleep happily. My advice- wait it out and it will get better. I'm sure we will have another developmental milestone to look forward to that will also mix things up in the sleep department. Good luck! :-)

  • I'm laughing only because I could have written this post!  DS is also a tummy sleeper and he's also been surprising/scaring himself by rolling to his back.  It wakes him up and makes him mad.  I posted a similar story a few days ago about DS being a mad "turtle" baby!!  On the floor he rolls from back to tummy and tummy to back just fine but in his crib he won't.  I don't remember who left the comment, but she suggested rolling up some towels and putting them on either side of him to prevent him from rolling.  SO, I rolled up 4 thick towels and put brand new, thick rubber bands around them.  I check the rubber bands on the towels each time before I put him in his crib just to make sure they're still intact.  I put him in the middle of the crib and two towels in each side of him.  I have to say, it has helped a ton but I can't help but wonder if we're just delaying the "learning to roll back by himself" by doing this.  Also, the little bugger can still inchworm his way to the top of the crib and flip over but this is usually just before wake up time so its not as big of a deal.  Prior to the towels, he was waking up more often and his big sister is having enough sleep problems that I don't need to be up any more at night that I already am.  Good luck!
