Long last name

We're just starting to think about names for baby #2. We have a 5 syllable, 11 letter last name that's very Italian. I tend to like longer names that can be shortened like Gabriela (Gaby) or Alexander (Alex). Middle name will either be Josephine or Joseph after DH's grandma. I worry a name like this with our last name is such a mouthful and a lot to have to write out. Is it worth the worry? Should we just go with what we like or try to choose shorter, simpler names?

Re: Long last name

  • I think it's a concern. My mom's family name is 4 syllables and 12 letters and German, so a big mouthful. Without exception, every person in the family has a 1 or 2 syllable first name, with many 1 syllable ones.  I'm a genealogy buff, too, and all the names going way back are short too.  I think a 3+ syllable first name plus a 2+ syllable middle name is too much to saddle any person with a 5 syllable last name with.

  • Long names don't bother me. Mine is 11 syllables and DD's is 10. And I'm sort of regretting that we didn't give DD two middle names (my maiden name as the second middle would have added another 4 ? also long and Italian). I also like the long names w/ cute nns (DD is Amalia/Molly).

If you like the names and they have meaning for you, I would go for it.

  • Thank you for your input. I think it's especially a concern for a girl because the MN is so long. I guess we'll wait and see when we find out if it's a boy or girl and then go from there.

I grew up with a long name.  My name was close to this: Natalie Elizabeth DiLeonardo.  I never had any issues with it being too long. I personally don't understand why people can get hung up on how long a name is. Sure I had to constantly spell the last name for people, but it wasn't the end of the world. Definitely go with a name you like.  I promise they'll be just fine.

  • I wouldn't think it's a big deal. Especially since she probably won't be called by her full name too often.

My husband has a long 4 syllable last name, so we purposely went with short first names for both kids.  I just like the sound better.  That being said, my kids both have 4 names (with my last as a second middle) so their names are long anyway.

Our last name is very similar to the one you posted and we always have to spell it! But it will be like that regardless of the first name. I guess the key is to use an easily spelled first name! But thank you this makes me feel a little better.
