How Soon Did You All Start Discussing Names

Hi All --

I'm still in my first trimester. I've been thinking about names, but haven't really started discussing them w/my husband.

I'm just curious, when did you all start tossing around names to begin coming up with final choices?

I started coming up with names as soon as I found out. DH didn't really want to talk about names until later in the second tri. I don't remember when we decided but it was one of the first names DH came up with.

  • When I was 12 "dating" my first "boyfriend." lol  I made him vote on names for all our future kids.

I'm not even pg and I lurk here and DH have been discussing names since before we got married.

Same here. DH and I have always discussed them.  Unfortunately, I sold him on a name that I used to love and now he won't consider any other girl names.

  • We're about 17 weeks and still haven't talked about named. I think last pregnancy we started talking about it after finding out we were having a girl.

  • Started talking about them while we were TTC. Had our boy name before I ever got pregnant. Narrowed down our girl name to 2 or 3 early in the pregnancy, and we sealed the deal a week or so after finding out she was a girl.

  • We started talking names long before we started TTC. We got serious not long after I got pregnant with #1. We both loved our girl name right away, but we were team green and didn't finalize his first name until about 38 weeks and we didn't choose his middle name until a few hours after he was born.

With #2, we still love the same girl name and we have already started talking about boy names again. I think we will find out the sex of the baby this time, but who knows how long it will take to actually decide.

  • We started talking about names pretty soon after I found out. Not seriously until after the first trimester.

Yep, this.  We liked Everett for years and that is what we named our DS.  Girls names are going to be a bit harder.  I wasn't completely sold on what we would have named a daughter, and I think we'll have to discuss a little more with another child.

  • Like some of the PPs, I've been dreaming up names for my future kids since I was a youngster. (They were mostly girl names, though -- see siggy! -- and not so much DH's style.) Aside from DS1's FN that was a somewhat obvious choice for our firstborn son, I held off on actual, two-sided name discussions until after we knew the sex both times.

We talked about names regularly for about a year before getting pregnant. We found out at 3w2d (according to my dating scan I had today) so by the time I was 5weeks our names were concrete.

  • My husband and I started throwing around names since we jumped on the baby making wagon.  Never too early to start!!
  • Probably about 10 years ago, a year into dating. I don't quite remember. I know we discussed it before we were married and we've been married almost 6 years. I think we probably have our names picked out because we simply can't agree on much. If we have more than two boys I have no idea what we'll do. I think we can handle two girls. More than three kids...um...no clue.

  • I started thinking about names before I even got pregnant...and I remember my DH and I discussing our favorite boy names once or twice before I was expecting.  Then all throughout 1st tri I narrowed my lists down but me and DH could never agree on a favorite and would always end up angry that the other didn't appreciate the awesome-ness of the others pick!  So we agreed to stop discussing it about a month ago until we found out the sex, then go from there.  We found out we're having a girl last Friday and decided on a name almost immediately--which I didn't expect at all.  I do wanna say that our favorite name from a year ago that we for sure thought we would name a boy (Reid) isn't even on our list anymore!  So your list will probably evolve as you progress through your pregnancy...just keep an open mind and you'll find the right name :)  Good luck!

DH & I started talking names when we first started dating.  Our girl name has never wavered (Paige), but we're still up in the air with our boy name.

This was us too. DS's name was chosen two years before he was even conceived. We're not going to start trying again for at least six months, but I still ask his opinions on names all the time. We want four kids, so I like to have a good short list of both boys' and girls' names that we both agree on at all times. My current long lists are about 40-50 names for each...DH likes maybe 4-5 from each list.

  • We are in our first cycle of TTC now and we've already started writing down some names we like (read: I make a huge list of beautiful names and DH crosses off the ones he hates) hah
  • We first talked about names when we were engaged. We each had a list. Throughout our marriage, the lists got shorter. By the time we had our 4th pregnancy / 1st baby, we knew the top 6 names in order. We stopped at two kids.

Second kid - Once we found out the gender. We each contemplated names separately before that, but wanted to delay the inevitable naming battle until we knew whether we needed a boy or girl name. We will do it this way next time, as well.

We've discussed it on and off in the past, but only prior to getting pregnant.

We recently bought a whiteboard to use for brainstorming--we can both write names on it, and look at each other's additions, but no commenting. We'll probably start actively discussing after we find out the sex in another 6 weeks.
