Natural Birth

Bummed after appointment...

So, we chose this hospital because it's stance on natural birth techniques. We, personally, want to deliver our first baby at a hospital, and will most likely deliver the rest at home. After deciding I wanted a natural birth (something I knew I always wanted, but actually decided after doing research) I chose to do a water birth. I feel as though would give me the birth I wanted. So, we looked at hospitals, and the one we're delivering at supports water birth: they have a tub you can rent, and you can even bring your own. Great. Perfect. Super excited.

Fast forward to this morning's appointment. My doctor informed me that she doesn't do water births. :( She does allow laboring in the tub/shower and fully supports natural birth meaning she won't push for medications or interventions unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. Also, my mother will be with me, who is a nurse, so she's more up-to-date on the lingo than I am. ;)

We decided to hire a doula because the chance of my doctor actually delivering my baby is 70%, and since I'm specific about what I do/don't want, I feel as though a doula will go to bat for me better than a written plan (which, I will still write, don't get me wrong.) I knew there was a chance she wouldn't deliver in the first place, but after our talk today, I feel like the risk is higher than I'd originally thought.

I'm not sure if there is a question in there. I just needed to get out my disappointment about not getting the exact birth I wanted. I absolutely LOVE my Dr and REALLY don't want to change, but it has been suggested to me to go to the midwife in the practice and get her opinion on what she can offer me.

Re: Bummed after appointment...

  • FWIW, I labored in the tub and gave birth in the bed and it really was a great experience overall. I've definitely considered a water birth for future babies, but thinking about the experience I had and everything that went on after the birth (delivering the placenta, getting stitched up and all), I think being in the bed actually made it smoother. Plus, I labored and pushed while laying on my side which was a great position for me at the time... I feel you may be slightly limited on the positions you can push in if you're in the tub.

That being said, if you want a water birth and you think the midwife at the practice would do one, I'd totally go for it! I used a midwife and she was amazing. Hopefully you get the experience you're looking for! GL!

  • When we took the hospital tour I was like 32 weeks pregnant and it was then that I learned that while my hospital HAD tubs, we were not allowed to use them b/c of some new BS law in Boston requiring that tubs be accessible from 3 sides or something...so basically they had pulled all the drains from the birthing tubs and you couldn't use them. I had kind of a meltdown about it but at that point really didn't want to change providers or hospitals, etc...I b!tched about it to anyone who would listen for about two weeks and then just decided to move on. I decided I'd stay home as long as possible in my own tub if I wanted.

Anyway, it turned out that I did a lot of laboring in bed (it just was where I wanted to be for a while) and then in the shower which was great. I delivered on the bed...I did a lot of pooping during pushing so I'm kind of glad I wasn't in the tub with all that going on.

And I was able to go all natural...I think you should listen to your gut. If you feel like you want another provider and there's a midwife in the practice I'd meet with her to see what your options are.
