Adoption

breastmilk

I am exclusivly pumping to feed my newborn.  I have TONS of extra milk.  I am donating my extra milk to a milk bank but learned that the place I donate to sells the milk to hospitals,. I'm sure at a huge mark up.  I was wondering if anyone knows of a way for me to sell my extra breast milk to parents of adopted kids or people who arent able to produce enough milk  The milk bank tests my blood for HIV and other diseases.  I would much rather sell the extra for a reasonable price rather than give to a company for them to sell.  Do you know of any websites to do this?

Re: breastmilk

  • Selling breastmilk privately is not generally a way to go, because introducing money tends to make things messy... But if you want to donate the milk to someone in need, check out your local chapter of Human Milk for Human Babies or Eats on Feets. There are always people who are desperate for milk. Different Facebook sites also try to help milk donation, the one I know best is Lactastic Mommy - Your BFF (Breast Feeding Friend). She will search high and low to connect donors and parents in need. Good luck! I'm sure there is someone who would love to have that extra milk!

  • Thanks for tip.  All places I heard of...The only advantage of the milk bank is that whoever gets my milk will know it has been tested for diseases, drugs and alcohol.

  • That is true, except that most people who want/need milk can't afford to go through a bank. If you were to become a donor it would be expected for you to get to know the family using the milk relatively well, so that they can kind of get a feel for you as a person and your safety in handling the milk, and of course whether you're obviously on drugs (hopefully you would disclose any medication you're on and not try to hide anything that could hurt their baby). As for diseases and drug testing, if they are worried and aren't quite able to just take your word for it they may ask you to have blood/urine testing done (which of course they would pay for), then show them the results. I relactated and was able to donate milk to a mama in need, and she and I have remained friends since. I love to see her little one and know I helped nourish him when he needed it. Donating to an individual family is pretty different than donating to a bank, which is basically anonymous.

  • Selling breastmilk is illegal and you could be prosecuted... don't think you want to go there :)

While it is controversial... you could donate to an individual.  We supported both of my daughters nutritional needs from donated milk from individuals just like you.  We are forever grateful to the four moms that donated milk for my girls.

If you are interested in being a donor, check out Eats on Feets for your area (found on FB often times) and/or MilkShare.  Also, if you belong to any mommy listservs, you may offer your help there... that's how we connected with two of our donors.

  • PS-  Milk Banks are great for a purpose.  Docs can write Rxs for breastmilk for babies that need breast milk.  However, w/o a Rx, it's very expensive...    I was quoted $4/oz so it was too costly and that's when we explored donor milk.

  • Yea it is costly...I didnt know how it worked.  I thought the milk bank I was planning to use GAVE the milk to people since I would be donating it.   $4 is crazy, and I;m sure the bank I was planning to use would be more since it goes to a company that fortifies it.
