?s on Amnio

I have my amnio tomorrow and I am pretty nervous over the whole needle going into me thing. Just wondering what I can expect and is it as painful as I am thinking it is? Also, how long is the appointment usually? Basically, I am terrified and am looking for some reassurance that it isn't as bad as I am thinking.

Re: ?s on Amnio

  • Everything I have been told by people who have had one is it takes a very short amount of time, and doesn't hurt (just like a pinch).  I hope everything turns out well!  I missed a post that you said you were having one...what's the reason?  GL tomorrow!

  • I just had it done this past Thursday. It truly wasn't so bad, the beginning part was just u/s looking at the baby and measuring and looking for any other markers. The next part was the test and the dr. Cleaned off my tummy and then poked me with a very thin needle. It stung for a second when it went in, but no worse then getting blood taken. He then collected two tubes of fluid. He removed the needle which didn't hurt or bleed and watched the baby for awhile and monitored the HB. After all was well, I went on my way and took it easy for the next two days.

GL tomorrow and take a deep breath, it's scarier waiting then the procedure.

We also know for sure now b/c we got our FISH results what we are having ;-)

  • It's not as bad as you're thinking. The anxiety leading up to it is way worse than the actual procedure. My memory of my amnio is cloudy, but if I recall, they cleaned my stomach with a brown liquid (forgot the name), then the nurse used the ultrasound machine to determine the best spot for the needle placement. Once placement is determined, the doctor inserted the needle and withdrew the fluid. It was a slight poke, not nearly as bad as I thought, and I did not watch the ultrasound screen as the needle went in. The actual needle part lasted maybe a minute. Make sure you have a ride home and rest for the remainder of the day (like, only get up to pee).

    Good luck!

  • The reason I am getting it done is because we found out I am a carrier for Muscular Dystrophy, (we tested because my mother is a carrier and my older brother has it) and now we are testing the baby to see if he has it or not. We weren't going to do it at all but now that we know baby could be born with it we are really scared.

I was hoping it would feel similar to taking blood blood, but I am still really nervous. It will be weird to see a needle go into my stomach. I'm trying to stay calm. Thanks for the walk through!

The needle is very long but they don't stick it all the way in so don't let that freak you out. It is much longer than it needs to be. It is also very thin! I would definitely say that it is fine to look away!
