2nd Trimester

What do you mean "morning sickness/nausea"?

The most frustrating part about my pregnancy is that I can't do very much without irritating my morning sickness.  Firends and family have lots of suggestions about how to mitigate nausea, but I do't know how helpful most of these will be since I don't really feel nauseous.

When I think of nausea, I think of an upset stomach, or that quesy feeling that you get...in your stomach.  My tummy doesn't really bother me.  I just have this all day gagging sensation which often results in either throwing up or dry heaves.  But I'm not nauseous the way I would be if I had the flu or a stomach bug.

Is this gagging sensation covered by "nausea" and morning sickness or am I crazy?  Has anyone else ever experienced skipping over "nausea" and going staright to vomiting/dry heaves?  I'm almost 16 weeks in myfirst pregnancy and there doesn't seem to be an end to this in sight.

  • Every pregnancy is different. What you described definitely falls under the nausea umbrella.

  • I had this for a really long time (still not totally gone) - even just opening the fridge made me gag (so weird!) but once I started Zofran that really helped and stopped the vomiting - maybe something to talk to your doctor about?

Well I always had the upset stomach that went with the heaves (and still do every once in awhile, I'm 27 weeks now) I'd recommend maybe having some no-sugar hard candy by you and popping one in when you feel the heaves are ready to start. I always found that a cup of green tea with a slice of candied ginger and a squirt of honey helped me but of course I was tipped off way before hand with the upset tummy.

If nothing else, pose this to your Dr. and like someone else said, you may get a prescription to help with it if it happens a lot. Wish you the best of luck! (It will start to subside soonish)

  • Thanks everyone, I feel much less weird after your feedback.  My next Dr.'s appointment is in a week and if I can make it that long I will definitely inquire about the zofran.  I'm giving preggie pop drops a try as well.  The sour taste is nice, but some times sucking on the hard candy triggers my gagging, so we'll see if these do the trick or not.
