Just got a BFP this morning. It happened faster this time than even the first, when I was 5 years younger! (I'm 39). Very nervous about it sticking, so we will see.
Since we've done this twice before I was a little surprised I learned so much new this time, but I did -- from this board (thank you!) and a lot from the new book The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant.
Highly recommend it -- great info and also very funny! The book sort of knocked me up. LOL Here are some of the things I learned from the book that helped. Hoping it helps you as well.
-- Good ways to stay calm! TTC always makes me a nervous wreck so it was great to read about some ways to beat stress. I will use them the next few weeks too while praying for stickiness.
-- Timing things right with the fertility monitor. Love that thing & used it for #2, but from the book I learned that the day of ovulation is NOT the most fertile. So that means the best time is the high days and as soon as you see peak -- preferably that morning and not that night or the next day.
-- Laying off the supplements. I have a very short LP (usually 9 days) so I took vitex. I learned from the book that it can delay ovulation. I'd never read that anywhere else. I noticed that was happening but thought it was just because I was older. Stopped the vitex and two cycles later, BFP. Other supplements I heard about are also not great -- did you know a study actually found *lower* pg rates among women who took l-arginine? One supplement that does seem to work: DHEA. I decided to wait on taking that one until we'd been trying awhile.
-- Not to test until 10 DPO at the earliest. It actually took until 13 DPO to get a positive this time. (I was out of cheapies so used the last pg test in the house, a digital. Weird to get the news that way, so definitively!)
-- Not to stress too much over my age. Apparently that statistic you see everywhere about 1 in 3 women over 35 having fertility problems comes from birth records from 1700s France. (It's true. I found the article after reading that in the book).
-- Shettles was wrong! If you want a boy (like we do), it's better to BD further from ovulation -- that's what studies show actually works. I was afraid of not getting pg at all so we didn't strictly follow that, so we'll see what happens.
Just in case you want to check out the book (can't recommend it enough!) here is the book webpage:
Re: BFP -- and here's why (a little long)
Congratulations! Thanks for the advice. Felt good to hear someone get negatives all the way to 13dpo (I'm at 10) and still be KU. I know it happens most of the time, but it's nice to hear a real human say that when you're getting stark white tests.
Also thinking about trying the monitor since amazon has it on sale. H&H 9 months to you!
Congratulations! I loved reading your story and can totally relate! 39 and using a CBFM- thanks for putting your .02 in there. A lot of folks are confused as to when to BD using a monitor. A Peak shows that LH spike- that could've happened the night before and the clock could be ticking, or you could have 24-48 hours, you just don't know. So yes, that's why you have to get on the HIGH(reading) horse and ride it on out- lol!
Good luck and best wishes for a H&H 9 mo's!!
Congrats! I'm thinking about getting the monitor too! Need to convince DH though.
GL and FX for a sticky baby!
Thanks! I love that monitor almost as much as I love the Impatient Woman book. They should bundle them together on amazon. (Partially because if you just trust the monitor and BD at night on the peak days you're probably missing the best chances. That's probably the biggest help I got from the book).
Speaking of amazon -- have your DH read the reviews of the monitor on there. There are so many stories about how it helped. Mine is definitely one -- it took me the longest for #1, when I was just charting, even though I was only 34 at the time. Next two, at 37 and 39, were faster, I'm guessing because I used the monitor. I worried about the cost but figured that it paid for itself in getting pg faster so I wasn't driving DH as crazy with my stressing that it wouldn't happen!
congratulations!
and this:

I can't figure out how to quote text, but I got a BFN today at 10 dpo and am bummed, even though I know that "statistics." it is good to see some anecdotal, "human" evidence
TTC since August 2011, Me = 40, DH = 38
Unexplained IF. Tried Clomid for 3 cycles. All BFNs. BFP 1/6/13. Chemical pregnancy.
Moving on to IVF#1. ER 11/26/13, 16 eggs retreived, 12 mature and all fertilized. 2 blasts transferred on 12/1. All other embies arrested so nothing left to freeze. Beta 12/10 = BFN. IVF #2 March 2014. BFP!!! TEAM BLUE!!!
Thanks. I'll try to get him on board but he's stuck in the mentality of -- let's just see what happens. I'm on that bit too but......... well....... I mean this would help. LOL.
My DH is in the same mentality...pretty sure he doesn't understand that just having sex whenever we feel like it doesn't mean we're gonna get KU. And I think he doesn't get how many pg tests I'd waste if I didn't know when I O'd. I already waste enough as it is!
This post was very much what I needed to hear on so many levels,
I wish you nothing but the best, and going to order this book today. You are like the 4th person to recommend that book lol. H&H 9 months to you!!!!
