Babies: 0 - 3 Months

BFing moms: help me!

My cousin has a week old baby. I'm also nursing my 6 month DD, but I can't go over to help my cousin since I'm sick. (Boo!) Anyway, she's telling me that she's nursing every one to three hours. The baby gets excited though and wiggles alot, so he sometimes moves his mouth around, causing bruises on her boob. He also falls asleep at the boob. I did tell her to strip him down and tickle his toes to keep him awake. Are there any tricks to help keep his head still? I so wish I could be there helping her instead of texting since I have no voice and don't feel well.

  • What position is she using?  My DD would never keep her head still so we used the football hold.  It gives you excellent control of their heads without making your arms sore like the cross cradle can.  GL to her!

  • Ditto PP on the football hold.  I can keep him still and it gives me the best position to get a good latch.
  • Ditto on the football hold. ?My DS liked football hold on one side and then cross cradle on the other (both ways have you holding their head in your hand). ?Also, my DS always fell asleep on the breast (often still does), that is really not a concern unless they are not gaining well. ?Have her call the pedi on Monday to go in for a weight check, they can be very reasuring. ?Also if her hospital has LC's on staff she should put in call to them. ?She may have to visit to hospital to be seen, but at my hospital it was free to see them there.
