Switch from RE to OB?

My RE and his entire office is great, unfortunately he does not deliver babies so I have to switch back to my OB.  I am not loving my OB practice, I had been with them 5 years and have been through 3 doctors, its like a revolving door.  Its a huge practice with absolutely no personalized care at all, even the receptionists are a bit surly.  Unfortunately, given the limited number of OB practices in PA (malpractice insurance issues have caused an exodus of good OBs) and the fact that my insurance has only a limited number of preferred OBs I can use, I am pretty much stuck with them.  I'm not looking forward to the switch.

When I I switch from RE to OB?  How long will I continue to see my RE and what will I expect the last few apointments?  What should I expect on my first OB appointment and when should I schedule it?  Will they do anything different from the normal since I have been seeing an RE for so long?

Re: Switch from RE to OB?

  • I have never heard of an RE delivering babies... their job is just to get you pg and monitor you for a little bit early on. some women get discharged to their OB right away, some later... my RE (and my insurance) has me stay with them for 8 weeks... then i saw my OB at 9 weeks.

Most OB practices with multiple docs rotate you through them all - that way you get to know every doc b/c you never know who will be on call the day you deliver.  It's pretty common- though, them not being nice/personalble sucks. If you can change, i'd do it sooner than later.... buti  know how it is with few to choose from! I'm in NJ and there are less and less choices every year - many docs are only doing GYN these days here.

at my first OB appt he did a quick US... some will do a pap if you are due for one... talked to me about what to expect re: timing of visits with him, testing needed to be done, etc.... and things to do/not do, eat/not eat, etc.  Usually your DH should go- esp b/c you might get an US.

Not sure of your age/risk category- but if you are in your 30's or high risk for downs, etc -  you should walk out of there with an Rx for a Neuchal translucency screening (ultrasound done between 11-13w)... an Rx for PNV's (since most REs won't refill once they discharge), and any other suppliments your OB feels you need.

    congrats on your pg!!
