Pregnant after a Loss

Paranoid after 6 week u/s

I had my 6 week dating and viability scan yesterday and was SO nervous because when I had one at 9 weeks in April that's when we found out that I was having a missed miscarriage.  I prepped myself for bad news and then the tech showed us the heart and said it was beating at 104bpm and that they like to see over 100 for 6 weeks. It was instant tears and excitement for my hubby and I and were so excited all night.  Well today the Dr. office called and said that 104 was on the low end and want to do a follow-up next week and then an appointment to discuss results after - are they predicting something I don't know about? So now I am looking all over the internet for normal heart rates at 6 weeks and see a range of things from 104 being normal to under 120 is a bad sign.

And of course they can't get me in until next Wednesday. Guess I'll just worry for the next 8 days like I had already been doing since the day I found out.

Thank you for reading my rant. :)

  • FX that everything turns out just fine.  With my last pregnancy, the HB was 90 at around 7 weeks, and my OB was concerned...I've read that 100-120 is good, but I'm sure all doctors use different guidelines (of course, right?).

  • Try not to worry yet.  At 6w2d mine was 116, which I was told was great for that point.  The tech said after 7weeks they like to see 120 or higher. Today at my 10week appt (new office) the tech said usually she wouldn't do another u/s but because the h/b was on the low side she would do another and it was 189 today. Low heart rates in the beginning are normal.

I had a previous pregnancy where I went for my first u/s at just over 7 weeks and my doctor said she wanted the heart rate to be over 100. I bet they just want to be on the safe side. Just remember, you're pregnant now and your baby has a good heartbeat. T&P that that baby has a faster heart rate next Wednesday!
  • 100 bpm is good for 6 weeks. A few years ago there was a fairly large study of fetal heartrates and outcomes and 100 bpm or above was considered normal for six weeks and those pregnancies had the lowest rate of loss. The good news though is that your doctor is monitoring you carefully and you'll get to see LO again soon.

Congratulations on seeing your LO's beautiful heartbeat!

  • My LO's hb was 100 at my 6 week ultrasound, and 22 weeks later, it's still going strong! (although much faster now)!
    BFP #1: 2/14/11. EDD: 10/20/11. Missed m/c discovered in April at 12 weeks, d&c. BFP #2: 12/27/11. EDD: 9/9/2012.
  • I had the exact same experience today. I am 6w2d and the heart beat was 103. The sonographer said they look for over 100 but y dr said that is was a little low. I go back next Monday for another sonogram. Agh! The wait is a killer.

  • Well, this is what I was told by the MFM at my RE's office (same bldg and he helps with 6-8 week u/s for high risk IVF patients). I am assuming at 6 weeks you weren't hearing it and it was a visual count from the Tech, right? The typical count would be that the hb begins at 5 weeks and is ~80 then (rarely ever detected in an u/s this early) . It increases about 2-3 bpm per day until about 12 weeks and can settle between 120-175 (this is all averaged) so if we do the math 80+14 (which is 2 beats per day for 7) then you are left with 94. If you err on the higher side of things 80+21=101.

I think this looks great for 6 weeks but if your dr wants to see you again it is more than likely just to see how the bpms are increasing and not that he thinks anything is wrong. Low just means low, not bad!

Hang in there and I am fxing for a great u/s next week!!!

  • Thank you all! Your words provide much comfort.  I sent a message to my Dr. asking if anything else looked concerning on the ultrasound and they said no and then at the end said to let them know if I have any other questions or having any bleeding or strong cramping. I wanted to be like what the heck, quit putting that in my head!

  • Welcome to the club :).  I haven't made it past 9/10 weeks for my previous miscarriages.  I had a u/s at the end of week 6, 7, and 8, all showing growth and a heartbeat.  And now I have to wait until week 10 for a follow-up.  I alternate between feeling positive and feeling like there is no way I'm actually still pregnant.  Hugs :).

  • At my u/s for this LO i was 6wks 3days and HB was 101. The u/s tech said that was good and this early on any where from 80-120 is normal and then after that 120-180. So i wasn't concerned at all!! My next u/s isn't untill week 12....I don't know if I want to wait that long though. But at least that tells you they definitely arn't concerned about the 101 HB!! Try not to worry and enjoy each moment carrying your precious little one!

  • I know it is tough, but try to focus on the fact there IS a heartbeat.  Praying your u/s next week goes wonderful and that hb has sped up!
