1st Trimester

Traveling during first trimester?

We had a trip booked to Mexico before we found out we were pregnant. I will be in week eight when we travel. I have been feeling constant nausea, but my doctor is getting me a prescription for that tomorrow. I have friends who have traveled in early pregnancy with no issues at all. Has anyone one here done this? Any tips? I really, really, really would hate to cancel this trip because who knows when we'll be able to go again? It is an all-inclusive but I plan to bring lots of cracker, pretzels and other food that I know I can eat. Thanks!

  • why couldnt you travel this early?? ?it's when you get to 35-36 weeks that travel should stop. ?enjoy your trip.

  • I traveled a lot for work in my first pregnancy.  No problems there - just sucked having m/s in a hotel room.  :)

This time, we made a trip to Montreal when I was about 6 weeks along.  No problems!  We didn't even think twice about it.  Luckily it was before my m/s kicked in this time - so it was a great trip!

  • I just got back from a trip to Las Vegas, and I am 7 weeks.  It went well.  I am not suffering from m/s too much, just some nausea from time to time.  What helped me with that was I bought some lemon drops at the airport.  If I was feeling nauseous I would pop one in and it would help.  What I noticed was that I was really tired and needed to rest a lot when we were out and about sight seeing.  If I wasn't pg, I could have walked the strip all day, but being pg I needed to go back to our room and rest a little.  We still had lots of fun, just remember to not overdo it.  I did a little too much walking and started to spot a little. I slowed down a bit and didn't have anymore spotting, so all turned out ok.  Hang by the ocean, drink a virgin pina colada, and relax!  You'll be fine!  Have fun!

  • We traveled to Australia when I was 7-8 weeks. My doc was fine with it. Don't drink the water in Mexico! That also applies to ice made with the water. Bring an arsenal of things you know help you feel better in your carryon--hard candies? vitamin B6?--as well as a cosmetic-bag size tote with hand sanitizer, wet wipes, breath mints, mouthwash, and a plastic bag just in case.

    Have a great time!

  • Try taking the B6 vitamin everyday with your pre-natal.  My dr said no more than 75 milagrams a day.  I take B6 everyday and have had minimal m/s issues.
  • My sister was 6 months pregnant and one of my guests was 4 months pregnant at my destination wedding in Mexico in May. Both their babies are healthy!

On a similar note, I just found out I am pregnant a few days ago - though I still need a dr. to confirm, so I'm not sure how far along I am (last period late October). We booked our very belated honeymoon to Costa Rica for mid-January. I'm hoping everything will go ok and I won't have to cancel, but I did buy trip insurance just in case.

The sucky part of it is that we chose CR so that we can go surfing. I may still go if the waves are small enough, and just stay away from any beginner surfers who aren't in control of their boards. Depends on the waves and how I'm feeling though. Otherwise, I guess I'll just relax on the beach and watch my husband. We also booked a white water rafting trip - though it is dry season, so I'm hoping the rapids will be small, and with a life jacket protecting me, I'll be fine. Guess I'll see how I feel when it gets closer. Ugh.

My husband and I disagreed about where we should go for our honeymoon - I wanted to go to French Polynesia, but then agreed on his choice of Costa Rica, figuring we should go before I get pregnant, so that we can be active, and to make it up to me we'd go to French Polynesia for a babymoon. We were trying for a couple months (went of bc in late August), but didn't think we'd have luck so soon! My sister took a year! So now I think I get to plan a trip to FP too for later in the pregnancy - though I think I should wait and see how everything goes over the next few months first. If I do plan - what is the best month to travel? Or, do you think it will suck being big in a bathing suit in paradise, and I should just wait a couple years and go on our anniversary when the baby is old enough to leave with my sister or parents for a week?

  • You can NOT cancel this trip.. you'll be kicking yourself later if you do.

I did quite a bit of flying when I was around 6 weeks.  There were a couple times on the plane that I felt pretty awful, but I think it was more in my head.  Like previous posters have said, bring some lemon drops or other sour candy to much on.  Of course, drink lots of water and dont be afraid to get up to go to the bathroom as much as needed.. I made a point of checking in online early and moving our seats close to the restrooms (and also middle/aisle seats so I didnt have to crawl over anyone but my husband).

As far as when you're at the resort.. of course stay away from the water, including the ice.  Frozen drinks I'd be a liiiittle leery of, only because they are made with ice.  The good thing about all inclusives is there is usually a restaurant open 24/7 or room service, so you'll never be without food when you need it.  I bet the m/s goes away as soon as you get there though.. I'm jealous, have a fun trip!

  • According to my books and the various websites that I've read traveling is safe, but even better if you can hold off until the 2nd trimester.  They say that if you are flying and already have morning sickness-it tends to gets worse with the cabin pressure and elevation.  Just be cautious, but I would consult your doctor first.

  • Don't cancel! I'm going on a trip at 7 weeks -- can't wait for the 3 hour flight. It's not a problem to travel just bring lots of snacks and stay hydrated.
