Soy Formula & Boys??? Help

I am at the end of my rope with trying different formulas to help with my ds fussiness and gas. He is sooooooo miserable and nothing seems to be working. My pedi even put him on zantac because she thinks that he has acide reflux as well. I was thinking about trying soy formula but heard and read that it is bad for little boys. Something about the hormones in the formula. Can anyone offer any advice or experience. I just don't know what to do anymore....he won't sleep or get settled...he is in so much pain!

Re: Soy Formula & Boys??? Help

  • If he is in pain- has anyone suggested Alimentum or Nutrimigen for possible milk protein intolerance??

My baby was in a lot of pain and had an intolerance so picky, that she is now on Neocate. all pain gone!

Soy- I understand it is bad for girls...

  • soy mimics estrogen in the body.  My pedi suggested it when Enfamil Lipil didn't agree with DS, so I asked him about the issues with soy.  He said, "The American Academy of Pediatrics hasn't shown a concern about soy, so I'm not concerned either."  Ummm, that was the last time we'll ever see that pedi.

What formulas have you tried?  I went to Good Start, and it agrees with DS much better.  I do still have to give him gas drops, but you can get all natural gas drops if you want.  I considered Nature's Best, but the BPA is high in that.  Have you tried Gentlease/Nutrimigen/Alimentin?  (I may have spelled those wrong, but I would DEFINITELY try all of those before I put my child on a soy based diet.  If none of those work, there is some sort of concoction you can make with goat's milk and something else.

Also consider that soy is one of the MOST contaminated foods consumed.  Good luck.  Let us know what you decide and what finally works!

  • Oh wow, our chosen pediatrician recommends similac isomil advance (soy) formula for all his patients.  Now I'm doing some reading based on your post and I don't want to use the formula and am now reconsidering using this pediatrician.  His reason for using it was based on the idea that it could help lower the risk of pediatric diabetes since it's not milk based.  Ugh.  What to do....
  • I had the same thing happen with my DS.  He was constantly in pain from gas and extremely fussy.  My pedi recommended a soy formula and I didn't want to try it after reading about it.  I decided to put him on Nutramigen.  It worked miracles!  In two day he was a new baby.  I thought all the gas and fussiness was reflux too, but I now know it was an intolerance.  You should try nutramigen or alimentum for a few days to see if it helps your son.
