medela pump - closed or open system?

A friend of mine is offering me her Medela Pump in Style.

But I heard somewhere that these pumps are open systems, and shouldn't be used second hand...

Anyone know for sure?

  • Open systems, not recommended to share.

  • The PISA is an open system. The more expensive model (I can't remember the name, but it's $$$$) is a closed, hospital-quality system.

Honestly, if your friend says she never had milk back up into the motor and you can trust her on that, I would see no problem with you using her pump.

Agreed. A stranger would be no deal, but if it isa well known, healthy friend you trust you should be ok.

  • It's an open system, and I would not share it. Even if she never saw milk go into the tubing, vapors and moisture could have, and those pumps have had issues with mold developing in the motor.

  • The hospital I used approves of using second hand...you just by new parts kit..tubs, nipple things....sold at hospital for 35...can get parts on ebay a little cheaper.
