Organic crib mattress?

DH thinks I'm already too over-protective of LO but he's pushing to put her to sleep in her crib more and I'm starting to notice she's outgrowing her bassinett so I might have to give really soon... BUT... in the process I started hearing about toxic crib mattresses and have gotten worried the hand me down one we received from a friend might not be such a good idea.

DH thinks I'm overdoing it but seriously, this is where LO will sleep for HOURS every night. Am I overreacting? All the research I've done has me wanting to buy an organic mattress for her and for us. Craziness! Help! He think's I'm crazy yet he wants to make her baby food because I want to buy organic (Earths best or PlumBaby) and he says thats too much and he can make it himself. :(

Re: Organic crib mattress?

  • Seems like you and DH need to talk and come to a compromise, or at least an understanding, of what each of you think is important. Does DH not respect your opinion? Or does he think it will cost too much and is he worried about finances? Or do you tend to want "your way" on everything concerning LO and DH feels like his opinion is of no value?

As far as the crib mattress, I thought the organic ones were a bit overpriced, so we went with this one, for about 1/2 the price of the fully labeled "organic" mattresses:

    Married 08.06
    Started TTC 05.08
Me: Stage II endo, borderline high FSH
    DH: perfect
    1 lap, 5 IUIs = 4 BFNs and 1 c/p
    2 IVFs, 2 FETs = 1 BFN, 1 c/p, 1 ectopic and finally a sticky BFP in May 2011!

    1 FET in Aug 2013 = BFP!

  • I personally would not go the organic route, BUT it is worth mentioning that used crib mattresses have been linked with increased risk of SIDS.  A slight increase, but that was enough for me to trow out the hand me down we were offered and go spend $60 (seriously, not that much money) for a new one.

The increased risk is even documented in reusing for a second child in the same home although that is smaller.  IMHO, each new baby gets a new mattress.

That mattress looks good but is about $100 more ($363) than the Naturepedic I was going to get ($259) from amazon. I'll keep looking though.

I think the situation with DH is this is kid #3 for him and #1 for me so he's all "it was good enough for my first 2 girls"... line which doesn't do much for me since his ex wasn't all that enthused about being pregnant to begin with. (They had kids young.)

As for finances, we're spending more than usual for alot of reasons but he seems to worry about that when it comes to the neccessary stuff rather than the small stuff that adds up. Weird.

I'm told with the next I won't be so nervous/protective but to be honest I feel I've let up on alot of things but any time we don't agree (which isnt that often) he goes into the you're going crazy mode unless I give in which on this topic I won't. I want to give my LO the best and for her to be healthy and happy. Don't want any should of, could ofs

Thank you for your responses, yall's honesty is always very appreciated!
