refinishing hardwood floors?

Anyone else decide to get this done before baby arrives?  We did and we were smart enough to say out of the house during the sanding and the actual staining and sealing.   Stayed at my inlaws all week. They finished the floors on Thursday.  Today is Sunday night.  We aired out the house ALL day yesterday and are doing the same now that we are home, but Im still so paranoid from the smell that is lingering.  Fortunately, our bedroom has carpeting and the door has been closed off the entire time.  I've opened up the windows in there too just for circulation and my go shut myself in there.

anyone else have experience with this?  how long did the smell last?

Re: refinishing hardwood floors?

  • We refinished, but my husband did it himself and we did wax instead of poly so there was no smell.

I would just keep the windows to that room open. I think the smell should be gone within a few more days.

We just finished our whole downstairs this week. We did a water based one though instead of poly because poly yellows over time with light. It smelled but was of no real danger to any of us. My husband stayed here and I stayed at my aunts for two nights.

  • The smell could linger for a couple of weeks, since stain and sealer both have pretty heavy odors.  Just be sure to change out your air filter in your A/C if you haven't already!  That should make a significant difference.  Also, if you live in a more humid part of the country, then you might try having some containers of damp-rid around to help absorb the odors.  It will be more annoying than it is dangerous at this point.

HTH and yay for newly finished floors!  I bet they look wonderful!  We installed new hard wood floors upstairs before DD was born and downstairs before DS was born (old wood floors were completely worn down and falling apart).  We love them!
