How do you give your baby a bath?

This may seem like a dumb question... ?I have been giving my baby a bath using a mesh net thingee since he was born (so its kind of like he is in a hammock in the baby bath tub). ?But its colder now and he is growing, so not only is he outgrowing the mesh thing, the air is a lot cooler now and he gets cold not being submerged in the water.

?My question is - do you bathe your baby in a baby tub full of water? ?Then do you empty it out and then give the baby a final rinse to get the suds off? ?do you do it inside your bath tub or on the sink counter like I do? ?

Thanks in advance for any replies!!?

Re: How do you give your baby a bath?

  • Two things...

First of all, how is the treatment of little Gavin's feet going?  We thought DD was going to have a club foot--but she has a posterial tibial bow instead.  We had done so much research about BCF before she was born.  Is everything going okay?

Second...we put DD on the foam bear spongy thing inside the tub.  She LOVES her bath but HATES the sling.  It keeps her partially submerged, but not entirely.  As I wash her, I use a rinse cup and get clean water from the faucet.  The suds seem to come off fine, and by the time we're done everything's so diluted it doesn't matter.  We put the tub on the counter in the bathroom--it's easier to reach.

  • I was using a baby bath and my little girl would try to fling herself out of it, now I run a bath in the tub for her and I go in with her and hold her to give her a bath and she loves it, I don't know if it's the right thing to do or not but that is what works the best for us.
  • we just put him right down in a full tub of water and i don't use so much soap so there aren't a ton of suds, so i just rinse with the water in the tub.

  • We put the bear bath sponge in the baby bathtub in the big tub. It works so much better than putting him directly in the baby tub because it's so much more comfy and he can't move around as much and bang his head on the sides. I don't dump out the water, but about halfway through the bath when the tub is really really full I pull the plug at the bottom and let some of the soapy water drain out, then use a cup to rinse with fresh water. It works pretty well for us!
    .
  • I have a baby bath pillow thing that I put in the tub and then fill the tub enough so that a little bit of the water pools into the pillow - so that she stays warm.
  • What we do is put the baby bath in the kitchen sink.  It rests nicely on top so that we can drain it, but it's high up.

I actually use the squirty bottle from the hospital to rinse him off.  I had a c-section and never needed to use the squirter, so that's what I use to rinse his hair and do one last rinse over his body.  I like it because it's a lot more directed and doesn't get his face covered with suds or water.

  • We fill his blue tub with warm distilled water up to his chest. He likes to kick and splash. I scrub him, DH warms his rinse water in the microwave (we don't use tap; it gave him a rash. India! Incredible India!) and then holds him steady while I rinse his hair. He then plucks DS out of the water, and I quickly pour more water over his body for a final rinse, then DH runs off with him to his towel. We do this in our shower stall; we don't have a proper bathtub.

I Lol'd when I read that. Maybe in the next round of India commercials, they can show people using distilled water for the bath!

Anyhoo, when I give DD a bath, I put her in her tub which is within our big tub. I lay her on that mesh hammock thing. I've also found that now that she's bigger a lot of her is out of the water so I just take the washcloth, dunk it in the water and wring it out on her tummy or legs or arms just so they constantly have warm water being poured on them.

  • DH and I usually do this together. We have 2 bath versions. The long version is DS sits in the blue baby bathtub which is in the real tub. DS wasn't comfortable in the mesh. At the end, I pick him up and we use a pitcher to rinse him off front and back. (I lay him over my legs while I sit on the edge of the tub.) More often, DH holds him and we put him under the tub faucet, I soap him up, and we rinse off. Every AM and PM  we do hands, face and bottom that way. Other times we do the whole thing.

  • My DH puts on his bathing suit and gets in our big tub. I keep one girl occupied on our bed, and hand him the other. He bathes them and lets them play in the tub (they LOVE the water). Once he's finished with one, I switch them out and get them dressed. They hate their baby bath tub.
  • Thanks so much for all of the advice!! ?

BecauseICan - his treatment is going really well! ?(thank god)... ?He was in casts for nine weeks which had to be changed every week. ?His Dr. is almost 7 hours away, so we had to drive a long way every week which was tough, but we got through it. ?Now he is in a brace which he wears for 23 hours a day, 7 days a week. ?Its just something we have gotten used to - poor little guy. ?By the time he is one he will only need to wear them for about 14 hours a day (so at night and for naps). ?But guess what - he rolled over at 3 months with his brace on - I cried - I was so happy =) ?not familiar w/ what your DD has - I will research that.. ?We didn't know he had clubfoot until he was born. ?Needless to say I was heartbroken - but now he is "fixed" so I am used to it...

?preg_amy - we use that bottle too! ?That's how we give him the final rinse - DH will just lift him in the air while I squirt away. ??
